They categorize them.

so you get something like

rate 1 - paraplegics

rate 2 - people missing an upper limb

rate 3 - people missing a lower limb

rate 4 - blind people

rate 5 - deaf people

rate 6 - midgets

rate 7 - people with learning difficulties.

So, they only compete against people who are similarly disabled.

Oh, and I know some of the above phrases weren't very PC, but its quicker just to call a spade a spade

London made a bid for the Olympics and won. That's why they are in London. A city/town in Scotland could have made a bid.

Why do we have to have this constant England/Scotland tension?? Can I help being English??

Completely agree, although I think many things that happen are weighted so London will acheive.

Recently there was a planning application to build the highest skyskraper in the UK in Birmingham. Parliament actually intervened advising that the place which has the highest building should be London. I really didn't understand that.

Regardless of where the Olympics are I am sure it will bring prosperity to the whole country. Some of the events are being held around the country, like the sailing is being held in Weymouth.

I'm happy for it to be in London. I want to stay in my quiet corner up north and have peace.

Although Peterborough is 100 miles away from London, we have a fast train link into Kings Cross that takes only 50 minutes so it is entirely possible that i could visit the games if I wanted to.

Think about this summer's World Cup. It created an enormous amount of wealth around Europe. People travelled to Europe for the games, the merchandise alone created jobs (I admit, probably low-paid jobs), people went to pubs and watched games whilst having a drink and sometimes a meal and the games themselves generated money.

Additionally, people got together at home and had a BBQ or party in order to watch the games together. It was a wonderfully unifying experience fo a lot of people and anything that makes people relax and enjoy themselves is good in my book.

Must agree with Old Spice, I think the whole country will benefit from this, its total wealth that will be created, we just have to trust the govenment not to spend it frivilously.

As a proud Brummie I would be delighted to see the Olympics here, but it would make no difference to Scotland, or indeed Liverpool, Leeds or Manchester, by being here and therefore being more 'centralised'. The main benefit will always be to the hosting city, but the benefits to the national economy are obvious.

The host city does indeed benefit but they get all the disruption too! Some people have been hassled out of their homes under compulsory purchase to make way for Olympic facilities. They were mainly old Victorian cottages and the excuse was that they needed to re-housed anyway.
