Former soccer star Lee Chapman was arrested and released without charge after his actress wife Leslie Ash was taken to hospital with a broken rib, police say.

Chapman, 43, was held on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm at their west London home on Friday morning and was taken to a police station for questioning.

"The woman did not wish to proceed with any allegation and the man was released without further action," Scotland Yard said in a statement.

Ash, 43, who starred in TV comedy "Men Behaving Badly", said there had been a "total misunderstanding". She told the Sun she hurt herself by falling out of bed during sex.

"We were making love and this happens -- how embarrassing is that?" she was quoted as saying. "I fractured one rib and I have tissue damage."
