My friend wants to do a course in this. I think it's an utter con and a waste of time. What do you think?

Who needs karma when you know you're great already?

A bit hogwash really isn't it. They can tell you any rubbish and sell you stuff saying it will cure this and that but they have no medical qualifications.

It seems to be the in thing for teenagers around her to want to study - it has taken over from 'media studies'.

Some of it is valid and based on very old knowledge. For example, the value of inhaling lavender to help with relaxation and aloe vera for healing. However, a lot of it is bullsh*t.

Tea tree oil is fantastic rubbed on gnat bites. No more itchy scratchy!

Lemon oil in an oil burner will keep flies from coming into your house.

Both of the above DO work. We get a lot of flies because we back onto the marshes and this year I have been burning lemon oil in the house we haven't had any flies

Now tea tree oil can work both ways. Some poeple are VERYallergic to it (me) and others find it helps with itching and scratching.

What I really object to is all those pills that claim to 'burn fat' or 'soak up fat' when all they do is expand in your gut and make you feel full.

Some things are dangerous if you're on other pills too. For example, ginseng, that some people take to boost virility, can cancel out the benefits of beta blockers thus being dangerous to heart patients who have had them prescribed.

Ginseng can also cause miscarriage.

Although I agree that there are lots of scams going on around that promise instant weight loss and perfect skin, I think that stuff like aromatherapy can help some people even if it's just as relaxation and as a placebo.  I had a spa break last week and had a salt scrub and massage, they make you feel fantastic and the oils and creams used were aromatherapeutic, if that's the word!

Sometimes one can get too tired and not be able to sleep so a mug of cocoa and a little lavender on ones pillow helps.
