[ Contaminated Cadbury’s chocolate bars were the “most credible” explanation for the outbreak of salmonella earlier this year, according to the conclusions of a new report by the Health Protection Agency (HPA).
Following the firm’s decision to recall over a million products from retailer shelves last month, an official study from the HPA has found that the infected chocolate was the likely cause of the outbreak.
It said that 36 out of 56 reported cases could be linked to the chocolate, after 13 people reported eating Cadbury’s products prior to their illness.
The report comes as the firm is set to release its results next week. It could now find itself having to contend with legal action after a woman from Larne in Northern Ireland was reported as saying she was considering taking Cadbury’s to court.
In a statement, Cadbury’s said: “We regret that people have been unwell. We have already announced that we have changes out testing protocol because we understood the consumers’ desire for no risk at all is paramount. Any product showing any trace of salmonella will be destroyed.”
However, despite the controversy the company is understood to be set to press ahead with new product development and could reinstate its television sponsorship of Coronation Street. ]
