Why is this product called Morso's with an apostrophe?????? If Morsos is the plural of Morso, it does not need an apostrophe - only an s!!!

The apostrophe is used to show possession (John's car) or to show contraction (It is - It's). It is NEVER used to make a word plural!!!!

How on earth can I teach that simple rule when companies like this cannot get it right and send out all the wrong messages??

Oldspice you should check out the apostrophe protection society:

http://www.apostrophe.fsnet.co.uk/index.htm

There was a topic on the forum there recently about teaching proper use of apostrophes.

Here is the reply I got from McVite's

Dear 'Mr Bounty'

Mini Morso's are a new product which have a completely different texture to Mini Cheddars.

We have noted your comments regarding the apostrophe in Morso's.  This is strictly speaking a misspelling, it is intended to represent a contemporary and quirky identity for the product, in fitting with the overall brand design.  The use of the apostrophe within the name however is an incorrect use of grammar and this will be reviewed on our future packaging.

Regards
Jane Woodward

What a rubbish reply! It is NOT an incorrect use of GRAMMAR it is an incorrect use of punctuation! First they claim it is a mis-spelling which is meant to be 'quirky' (how exactly?) then they claim it is grammar. i think they're making it up as they go along!

Companies have a responsibility to get spelling, punctuation and grammar right!

Re the Apostrophe Protection Society - they go a bit over the top sometimes. They issue 'improvement notices' to errant breachers of the apostrophe!

Old but spicey!

I agree with Oldspice.  It is a rubbish reply.  If a corporate body like this can't get a simple punctuation point right how can children expect to learn the correct English.  I will be passing this onto Radio Five Live and see what they say.
