DNA
« on: September 28, 2011, 09:21:17 pm »
just read that our wonderful government is going to be destroying a lot of DNA records of suspected criminals. (the ones that weren't actually convicted.) is this really a good idea? how does everyone feel about this subject in general? would you consent to surrendering your DNA to a national database? or do you think that's just another step towards 1984?

Someone who has not been convicted of a crime is effectively innocent. Therefore, the retention of their DNA is wrong.

I have quite a serious genetic disease and therfore my DNA is interesting. If I wish to surrender some for research purposes, that's fine - but I would not like to be forced into that for scientific purposes.  Why should some drug company profit from my DNA?

that's one side of the argument. the other (which is all over the news today) is that rapists have indeed been caught due to their dna already being on record from a crime they were cleared of. so is the destruction of this information potentially giving the green light to some nasty people?
