Were any of you guys or gals in the Scouts, Guides or Girls/Boys Brigades?

I was asked to leave the Brownies in disgrace.  I set fire to Brown Owl's bonfire as I objected to us being used as skivvies under the excuse of earning badges.  My sons were both Beavers and Cubs though and had a great time - Cubs was just like a junior youth club with both boys and girls.

i was a sixer in the cubs. yay - great times! (played a lot of rounders in my pack - never did do much badge work.)

I was a Brownie. I loved it so much they let me stay an extra year, but Guides was not so great and I didn't last long there.

I was in the Girls Brigade! I joined a year early at the age of 5 and went through the whole company, leaving at the age of 19 as a junior officer. By then I was at work so getting to the Brigade nights on time was difficult. I got my Duke of Edinburgh awards at GB.

 

Wonderful times! Camping, learning arts and crafts, drill, healthy exercise (club swinging and formation skipping!!!!!) and cookery.

I was a Beaver but I wasn't keen on Cubs, so I didn't join long-term.

i was a brownie for a while but refused to go back when the little girl sitting next to me on the floor cross leged for pow wow ( or what ever it was called ) wet herself and i got the blame !!  lol

Owing to an unfortunate clerical error I was in the sixth form Girl Guides when I was 19. That was a hard year.

the state of the cubs and scouts in my area is abysmal. one of my friends son goes... he's one of the TWO cubs in his pack. how pathetic is that? nobody seems to want to send there kids there these days, which is sad. (in this area, at least.). wjp6662007-05-01 03:33:37

Last summer, after over 70 years, my former Girls Brigade company closed. As my mother was a founder member of that company and my sister and I had both been members, i was invited to the closing service. It was so sad. There were photographs there going back to the 1930s and cine films back to the 50s.

 

It closed because of a lack of adults willing to run the company. People have busy lives these days - and irregular working patterns. Also, people are worried about being sued for Health & Safety problems or being accused of sexual crimes.

 

It's a sad reflection of our modern world.

It's the same here, mainly due to the bad press a tiny minority of leaders have had.  It's a shame because the Cubs/Scouts my sons attended had really moved on and as I said, was more like a youth club with boys and girls attending. They were always doing things like going swimming, skating, beach bbqs etc and the family camps were hilarious.

It's true; I knew a gay Scout master who didn't dare come out as he knew he'd be branded a paedophile, or at least be forced to give it up.
