Cadbury Trident advert racist?
« on: March 02, 2007, 03:42:23 pm »

Apparently there's been a bit of a hoohah about the new Trident gum advert. Anyone seen it and what do you think? I just think it's a crap advert.

LONDON - The advertising watchdog is to launch a formal investigation
into the Cadbury Trident ad campaign created by JWT after it received
99 complaints with more expected to follow.

The spot
depicts a dub poet on stage complaining about the blandness of his
chewing gum. An audience member hands him a stick of Cadbury's new
Trident gum in peppermint...

I didn't think it was racist until I saw the follow-up ad, in which a white man does an impersonation of the poet. That's a bit dodgy. I like the first ad.
Who needs karma when you know you're great already?

Me either. Has anyone tried the Trident gum yet? I had the lime and strawberry one which was OK, then after that I realised it had beef gelatine in Dead I never thought chewing gum would have gelatine in.

I wouldn't consider it racist, but it is flipping dreadful.
And the one with the woman giving a speech to what I assume is a WI meeting is really awful.

Adverts like that only make me want to avoid buying the things they're advertising, so I suppose they don't work on me. Of course I remember them, but if I still don't buy them then they're not doing their job are they?

The Pot Noodle ones had the same effect.Dead

I have seen one of the adverts and agree it's annoying but I don't think it was racist. I would have thought they would have changed the name Trident ... that name just makes me think of the whole nuclear submarine debate!
