Valentines Day

As some of you know, my Valentine's pressie was a short trip to Florence. We got back home at about 11am having travelled since 3.30am this morning. It was beautiful. Much busier and seedier than I expected (lots of traffic and beggars) but beaurtiful - and so cheap.
Old but spicey!

I don't know why but I always thought Italy was expensive.

We had a wonderful time thanks. It's so like anything I have ever seen before. Because we flew out in the early hours and flew back in the early hours we missed two nights' sleep so we are very tired but it was well worth it.

By cheap, I mean public services (coach transfer from Pisa airport to Florence - 80 klm was just 8 Euros each way). Entrance to the Ufizzi, the most important and famous art gallery in the world was just 6 Euros for BOTH of us (special 2 for 1 deal for tourists that day). Eating out was cheap too - a reasonable meal for two with drinks was usually about 20 Euros for both of us.

What I found difficult was the size of the portions. They were HUGE and it's not unusual for Italians to eat four or five courses at one stiing. I had to keep saying 'piccolo (small)' but the servings were still too large for me.  On Valentines night I watched a local young couple eat their way through lasagne to start followed by chicken and chips, a thin folding pizza each and then a dessert! She was pin thin too!

It's the same in Malta, where do these people put their food? Glad to hear you had such a nice time. It sounds like a place I would enjoy too. Do you speak much Italian, Oldspice?

I didn't speak any before I went but I practised a few phrases on the plane and managed to ask for the basics such as food, drinks and directions.  Some of it is similar to French and Spanish so I coped Ok.
