Katie Melua's underwater record bid
(Sunday October 01, 2006 08:30 AM)
Singer Katie Melua is to perform at the bottom of the North Sea.
The star will set a new Guinness World Record for the world's deepest underwater gig.
The unlikely concert will take place on an oil rig more than 300ft below the water surface.
Melua has undergone strict medical tests in preparation for the concert on October 2.
An audience of oil rig workers will watch the gig
at the bottom of a rig on the Statoil Troll platform in the North Sea,
on Europe's largest off-shore gas field.
Melua said: "I can't wait. If it comes off it will
be a world record for the deepest ever underwater gig, which will be
pretty cool."
The singer's spokeswoman said: "Katie and her band
have undergone full medical examinations and will undertake strict
emergency training prior to the event."
A Guinness World Records adjudicator will be in the audience for the concert, which will be broadcast on Norwegian TV.
A spokesman for the oil company said: "We are
thrilled that Katie Melua will be performing this concert. It will
certainly be an occasion to remember."
Melua, Britain's biggest-selling female artist,
has spent the last three months touring the US and will play Wembley
Arena on December 3.
