A postman suspended for telling people how to stop receiving junk mail says he remains a Royal Mail employee, but will know if he is to be sacked in a week. He attended a disciplinary hearing after circulating his own leaflet on his round in Barry, south Wales, about unsolicited mail.

My postman told me he gets 1p for every leaflet he delivers and some days I get 5 so if he is getting 5p extra for every door he goes to it can soon mount up.

I registered with that brilliant service that stops you getting unwanted phone calls and since I signed up i have only had a few.

I find some junk mail very useful to use as teaching material. I get the students to study the language style (is it persuasive? instructive? informative?) and the word classes (how do they use verbs, adjectives, nouns and adverbs? I get them to look at the illustrations and their function (maps? pictures of the product? cartoons?) and the graphics such as text style and size - would they write a letter in that style/size? If not why not? etc. I then get them to produce their own piece of junk mail.

No that is definitely not right. It's free.

No, it's free to register on the TPS.

It does take a while to fully take effect but I hardly ever get any cold callers now. If I do, I just tell them that I'm registered with the TPS and they usually apologise and go.
