New shopping mall
« on: October 10, 2006, 09:16:31 am »

Plymouth's new shopping mall opened last Thursday. It's full of the same old shops that you see on most high streets but some of the shops we have never had before.

I went to explore the place on Sunday and I found a branch of Hotel Chocolat  I bought a few bits there and whilst they were fairly expensive, I was not disappointed.

According to the news this weekend, the Starbucks in our new mall was the second busiest in the country behind Heathrow airport!

My Australian friends said there's a lot of bad feeling against Starbucks over there but I never found what it was all about. I must say I prefer Costa or Cafe Nero myself.

I think the initial popularity is mostly novelty. I haven't seen a Starbucks closer than Bristol, there isn't even one in Exeter. We have had a couple of Costas here for a few years so people are just trying what is new.

I have discovered a Hotel Chocolat store in Solihull. Very expensive, although they had some smaller boxes which weren't too bad, comparitively speaking. I was tempted but decided I should go as a treat if I get to make another visit soon (GC will know what I mean!)

I don't know about your town 623, but Plymouth has been waiting so long for a shopping centre because of the way the shops were rebuilt after the bombings in the war. The shops were rebuilt around big square back yards so if the shops wanted deliveries there was no way to cover or join the shops together. Two years ago a huge area had to be knocked down again and rebuilt to make our new mall, which opened last week. I heard that Plymouth was the biggest city in England without a covered shopping centre.

You should have seen the state of Birmingham ten years ago. They tried to do about ten years' worth of redevelopment work in five, and as for the old Bull Ring, it was a total embarassment. Thankfully now the city has the benefits a second city should, but for too long city planners did far too little.

Forgot to say, Hotel Chocolat do a 100% cocoa solids bar. I bet it's vile.
