I think I’m being scammed
« on: June 22, 2006, 10:32:48 am »
A while ago I got sent a book that I never wanted and the company
wanted 99p for it. I never sent anything because I thought it was a
scam, and now they have sent a letter saying that if I dont pay in 10
days, they will charge £17.99 for it, and if I dont pay that, I will be
referred to a debt collection agency. How can they do this? I never
applied for the book in the first place - they just sent it to me.

Check with the Citizen's Advice Bureau online but I think if you never requested the book and they just sent it to you then you don't have to pay for it and they have to arrange to collect it.

As Cherry says, it's a good idea to check with the CAB, but it sounds to me like they're trying to scare you into giving them money.
Who needs karma when you know you're great already?

They are breaking the law. Report them to Trading Standards.

Yep they're breaking the law. No-one has the legal right to demand money from you for something you never requested!

Are you sure?

I'm gonna write back to them and tell them if they want the book back they can send a prepaid envelope for it.

I would do that too and tell them you want to see evidence that you ordered that book from them.

I had that with some dvds, i wimped out and paid £1 something to send it back as i couldn't be bothered with the hassle of waiting for it to be collected.  I put a snotty letter in and haven't heard anything since.  We looked online and this company has loads of complaints against them.
