Milk Tray Man
« on: June 13, 2006, 09:02:26 am »

I have just obtained a copy of an old advert but need an argument settled about it.

My friend reckons it's an eighties ad but I'm sure it comes from the 70's.

It's the Milk Tray ad where the chap swims through the the shark infested sea to deliver his package and then after he's done hie duty he dives back into the sea complete with knife in mouth.

70's or 80's?

I'm convinced it was 70s. The Goodies did an episode where they made spoofs of lots of different adverts and I'm fairly sure the Milk Tray man with the sharks was one of them. That Goodies episode was from 1976.

I'd say it's early 80's

The part was played by seven different actors.

I found this quote:

the Milk Tray man." It is a reference to an advertisement popular in Britain in the 1970s, where a dashing man in a black polo shirt jumps out of planes and helicopters and braves shark-infested waters or other dangers to deliver a lady her Cadbury's chocolates.

He's actually from the late 60's and was first shown in black & white. There was a thing on him on channel 4 'The greatest TV ads' or something like that and it showed you all the Milktray men down the years, they also did the same with the Flake girl.

George Lazenby, who went on to become James Bond in the film OHMSS (where Bond marries and she gets shot), was one of the Milk Tray men. He was originally a stunt man but had a nice face so they let him become an actor.
Old but spicey!
