That record was a HUGE number 1 hit and was produced by Joe Meek in his upstairs flat in Holloway Road. The banging heard in the chorus was made by friends and members of the group stamping on the stairs and banging dustbin lids.

He also produced Johnny Remember me and Telstar in that flat and many other hits besides.

Joe, sadly, shot his landlady and then himself after descending into depression and paranoia

I am completely wrong about the song that the Applejacks sang. It was not Have I the Right? at all, it was Tell Me When. i can't believe I could have made such a mistake! Mond you, they sound much the same!
