I don't think you can blame Maggie for the incidents Oldspice is describing.

Yes, but what is poverty? Many of my daughter's friends have free school dinners and get EMA money (Educational Maintenance Allowance, paid to 16 - 19 year olds in further education whose parents are on less than £30, 000 per year) and yet they have expensive mobile phones, trainers that cost £70, and holidays abroad. Some even get dropped off at school in two-year-old cars. Something is worng somewhere!

A boy in my son's year at school (aged 14) has been excluded for bad behaviour.  So now he gets taken to school twice a week by taxi for a one-to-one session (I think a total of four hours a week).  The rest of the time he works in the local fruit and veg shop, earning a good wage, doing very nicely thank you, and taking the mickey out of all his old classmates who are stuck in school.  I expect he is one of the ones classed as living in poverty though.

I am all for providing a 'hand up' - benefits to help people when times are hard. No child should suffer from hunger or cold or humiliation (read Angela's Ashes if you want to know about real poverty) but some of the 'hand outs' these days justy encourage people to be lazy, worik-shy spongers.

I thought I would never feel like this. In my youth and young adulthood I have marched against everything - poverty, nuclear bombs, war, Thatcher's Britain - but I now feel burned out. All around me I see people with their hands out - gimme, gimme, gimme and don't expect me to get off my a*** to do anything for myself.

And Goldencup - your story is just the tip of the iceberg. Bad behaviour in schools and in society is escalating and so many parents  are claiming their children have ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). In my opinion the problem is caused by appalling diets (a bottle of cola and a packet of crisps for breakfast is common) and bad parenting.

People who earn an honest wage and keep out of trouble are offered little or no help.
