Food industry initiates trans fat removal programme

By Anthony Fletcher

17/10/2006
-
Over £1.5billion worth
of food products in the UK are being reformulated in order to eliminate
harmful trans fats, according to a food industry body.

The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) has claimed that hundreds of well-known household names, including Hula Hoops, Mars Bars, Nestle Cheerios and Weetabix, have been redesigned to take into account growing health concerns.

"The industry is committed to reducing the level of trans fats to as
low as is technically possible and has been actively reducing these
levels,"
said FDF communications director Julian Hunt.

"Many companies through reformulating their products have managed
to dramatically reduce the levels over the past two years. This is
fully in line with manufacturers' commitment through FDF's Food and
Health Manifesto to reduce levels of fats."

About time, they were supposed to eliminate these ages ago. Don't forget that many 'cheaper' products will still use trans fats to keep costs down.

Morrisons Bettabuy certainly does. My friend eats their Bettabuy chocolate all the time which contains hydrogenated fats. I won't touch it with a barge pole.

'Gold bars' used to be practically all trans fat, wonder if they've changed them.

The new Dark KitKat contains HVO and the ordinary KitKat doesn't so what's that about?

They probably tried to cut some costs to make up for the fact that producing a higher cocoa content Kitkat costs them more money.
