I may have told this story before so I apologise if I have.

I was ten years old and it was a few weeks after my mother had died. It was a warm night and all the windows were open.  I was in bed when I could hear tapping from the room next door to mine. It woke me up. There was a tap - tap- tap like someone using a hammer and chisel to dislodge masonary. Then I would hear a crumbling sound like mansonary falling. I was scared stiff but I got up and went into the room next door. The room was completely empty - except for a pile of plaster in the corner and a huge patch of plasterless wall with the wooden slats showing underneath. I was completely alone in the house. I went from room to room calling my dad and sister but the house was empty. I was very spooked. I went back to bed and finally got to sleep. When I awoke in the morning my sister and her husband were there and all the rooms were completely normal. The only reason why anyone believed my story was that I was able to describe what was actually under the plaster - something I had no previous knowledge of. I have no explanation for what happened.

That really sent shivers down my spine - I've never heard that story before.

Right - this genuinely happened to a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago (I bet you've heard that before but it did).  She's a bell ringer in a small church in Dorset.  She went up to her bell rope for a practice session and had a strange sensation that somebody was behind her.  She kept looking round but nobody was there. Other people there even asked her what was wrong but she couldn't explain it.  Just before they were going to start the session she felt somebody put their hands on her shoulders and move her a few feet away, as you would when guiding a child.  The rope broke and the bell fell down just where she had been standing.

conclusive proof that not all ghosts/entities are evil.

When my mother was younger she worked in Spain and, one night in her apartment, woke up and felt someone standing over her. She could see a man above her and tried to scream but couldn't; she tried to push him off but it was as if there was nothing there, yet at the same time she could feel his weight. She later found out that the name of the apartment block was the Spanish for 'new life'.

What I’m about to tell you happened between the years of 1974 – 77, when I was between 5 and 8 years old.  My family lived in a first floor flat and I never liked my bedroom; I shared it with my brother, but he never had a problem with it.  One night I woke up and it was as if I could feel someone staring at me.  I turned around in bed and a shadowy figure was sitting on the chair by my bed.  As you can guess, this scared the hell out of me.  I remember just staring at this ghostly shadow, wondering what I was going to do.  I must have fallen asleep at some point though, because I don’t remember much else.

A while later, I don’t know exactly how long, I woke up to feel the very same staring sensation on my neck.  I turned in bed and there was the shadowy figure again sat on the chair by my bed.  This time I felt scared, but also curious.  I got out of bed on the opposite side to the chair and slowly walked around my bed.  I expected it to vanish, but it didn’t.  As I got closer to the shadow, it stood up and floated towards me.  I have never been so frightened in my whole life.  It floated through me and vanished!  How I got to sleep that night, I will never know.

On yet another night, I woke up to go to the loo.  I met my mum in the hallway, who also needed the loo, and told her that she could go in first.  When I looked in my bedroom from the hallway, there were two figures standing next to my brother’s bed.  One was what I surmised was a tall woman with a large brimmed hat.  She was holding hands with a small child; for some reason I felt he was wearing a uniform of some kind.  I was so happy when my mum came out of the loo!  When I went back to my bedroom, the apparitions were gone.  My mum always told me I was seeing things and hated it when I told my ghost stories to people.  What she never told me until the 1990’s was that she too had seen the two figures, although this time they had been standing in front of the kitchen door in the afternoon!  Spooky!   :o

Other strange things happened in that flat and I was so happy when we moved out in 1977.  I have since looked up the flat to see what was there before, but it was only farmland and scrub.  Why these figures appeared to me is a complete mystery.

They're just the bits I remember clearly.  I never talk about the other 'thing' I saw in the hallway myself once because I could and can never get my own head around it.

out of all the spooky stories i've heard from friends (and friends of friends) the most frequent one is of people waking in the middle of the night and being held down by an 'entity'. this happens to a friend of mine on a very regular basis.

I still think Oldspice's story is the spookiest - that's a time-slip one and extremely difficult to explain.

A few years after I moved to Bristol to live with my wife and her parents, something weird happened in the kitchen.  We were frequently seeing a white shape shooting past the kitchen doorway and vanishing.  On one occasion, my wife was standing in the doorway and I was in the kitchen, when I saw the shape at the bottom of the stairwell.  At that very moment, my wife jumped and said it felt like someone had slapped her on the bum!  It never happened again, but we kept on seeing it from time to time.  We have a feeling it was the spiritual residue of a cat, possibly one of ours that had passed on.

OK, I never really talk about this because it's a bit weird and I have trouble understanding what happened.

Once, when I was living in the flat I mentioned above, I was in my bedroom playing with my toy cars on my brother's bed.  I got bored and went to leave the room.  When I opened the door, I saw the strangest thing ever.  The hallway was a mass of purple and blue, like some weird cloud, which completely filled the place.  At that same moment I felt scared, and I mean really, really scared; it just felt evil and chaotic.  I slammed the door shut and ran to the other side of the room, and I was not able to move for what seemed ages.  When I did get the courage up to look, the hallway was clear and it was as if nothing had happened.

I just wonder why this stuff happened to me!
