What I’m about to tell you happened between the years of 1974 – 77, when I was between 5 and 8 years old. My family lived in a first floor flat and I never liked my bedroom; I shared it with my brother, but he never had a problem with it. One night I woke up and it was as if I could feel someone staring at me. I turned around in bed and a shadowy figure was sitting on the chair by my bed. As you can guess, this scared the hell out of me. I remember just staring at this ghostly shadow, wondering what I was going to do. I must have fallen asleep at some point though, because I don’t remember much else.
A while later, I don’t know exactly how long, I woke up to feel the very same staring sensation on my neck. I turned in bed and there was the shadowy figure again sat on the chair by my bed. This time I felt scared, but also curious. I got out of bed on the opposite side to the chair and slowly walked around my bed. I expected it to vanish, but it didn’t. As I got closer to the shadow, it stood up and floated towards me. I have never been so frightened in my whole life. It floated through me and vanished! How I got to sleep that night, I will never know.
On yet another night, I woke up to go to the loo. I met my mum in the hallway, who also needed the loo, and told her that she could go in first. When I looked in my bedroom from the hallway, there were two figures standing next to my brother’s bed. One was what I surmised was a tall woman with a large brimmed hat. She was holding hands with a small child; for some reason I felt he was wearing a uniform of some kind. I was so happy when my mum came out of the loo! When I went back to my bedroom, the apparitions were gone. My mum always told me I was seeing things and hated it when I told my ghost stories to people. What she never told me until the 1990’s was that she too had seen the two figures, although this time they had been standing in front of the kitchen door in the afternoon! Spooky!
Other strange things happened in that flat and I was so happy when we moved out in 1977. I have since looked up the flat to see what was there before, but it was only farmland and scrub. Why these figures appeared to me is a complete mystery.
