Pink and Spearmint... HELP!!!!
« on: December 16, 2005, 02:45:47 am »
Can
anyone tell the name of the sweets I remember from when I  was
tiny in the 70's... they were birght pink, hard on the outside, chewy
in the middle and spearmint flavoured.  The were round but
squashed (like a minstrel) with bobbles on the top and bottom...

Please help me...

Many thanks,

Bj

They were called Spearmint Chews (not to be confused with the white chewy sewwts of the same name) and they were made by Trebor and sold from jars by the quarter. I miss them

Yes spearmint chews were my favourites too but they were in the 50s/60s and very soft almost like bubble gum.  I couldn't get enough of
them. Another favourite from that time was
the pineapple chew which I think was made in stick
form rather than a wrapped sweet. Also my local shop Brodies made their
own fresh pineapple lollies which were out of this world. I also remember
chocolate ice lollies at the picture house (cinema)! Another favourite which disappeared was white chocolate coated creme de menth, a flat circular sweet without wrapper.

The mid-late 50s and 1960s were a golden time for confectionary following years of rationing. I don't remember any of the things you describe but they sound fantastic.

So many of my favourites from past years have gone. Now the sweet shops are full of bland, boring products based on caramel/toffee/biscuit/nut/wafer themes. It's very hard to get a decent boiled sweet too, unless you go on the websites such a Hello Sweetie.

Remember stepping into a sweet shop to be surrounded by jars and jars of "suckers"? And hasn't the taste of the sweets changed? I swear that Caramac and Milky Bar have become sweeter and less creamy. Tuck into a Toffe Crisp these days if you can. It's horrible! Nasty cheap chocolate and filling.

Pieeye, do you remember Punch bars? What were the fillings like? And do you remember when Picnic bars had no nuts in them? I swear they changed them in the late 60s or thereabouts.

You're older than me Oldspice, but I agree things tasted better in the 70's.

I followed my comments about the 50s and 60s with the words 'I don't remember any of the things you describe'.

I think you are more familiar with me than you're letting on!
