Title: Chocolate is not what it was
Post by: on June 19, 2005, 09:53:34 am
I think a number of bars and sweeties like Mars, Maltesers, Toblerone and Caramac just dont taste the same any more.  Toblerone particularly has lost it's distinctive taste.  Is it all down to the EU meddling with ingredients?

It is. You just can't trust the unholy Chirac - Schroeder alliance...

Unless of course you are French or German.

No, it's old-age setting in.  It also makes you forget correct usage of the apostrophe.  (I'm in an extra-pedantic mood this morning!).

Actually you're quite right.  My particular gripe is Toffee Crisp.  They used to be delicious!

You also have to factor in that as you get older, like everything else, your taste buds change/deteriorate.

Would you have eaten Mexican/Indian foods aged 5?

It is my kids that remind me of this when I wonder what they are talking about when they tell me something is spicey even though I cannot taste it.

I had very hot chilli when I was five at my parents' friends' house.  On the same evening, I decided it would be a good idea to bite the glass containing my lemonade sending my Mum into a frenzied panic.  Bizarrely they gave me bread and butter afterwards to help the glass go down!

McDonalds now do Lion Mcflurry.  Yes, lion bars still exist.  Not sure about the peanut version though.  They were better.

I think it's Nestle products - or rather what used to be Rowntree products - that have deteriorated.

What if you're not the owner?

I think certain products have deteriorated, I think Smarties taste far
too sweet now, but I reckon that's cos I used to love em as a kid.
Kiddies seem to like sweeter stuff, probbaly why Milkybar is so popular
with them.
