Title: A Topical Thread
Post by: wjp666 on February 17, 2014, 11:38:26 pm
Fracking.

What does everyone think of this?  :o

I am against it.  I prefer wind and solar power.

I am against it too. I think it is ugly and destructive.
Green energy is the way forward I think.

Indeed, I agree with you both. Apart from the dangers of what it could actually lead tod after years and years of this (so little is known about what could happen to the stability of our planet if we keep raping it like this), I can't beliueve it's 2014 and we are still insisting on using fossil fuels. For heavens sake... the electric car was properly prototyped in the 60's! Stop pandering down to the fuel giants and work on a mass-availabe, renewable, green energy we should've had decades ago. The science is there, and it works. It's worked for years. Just what are the governments of the world afraid of? (As if we didn't already know.)

I do not think it's an exaggeration to say that the oil giants rule the world.

It is well known that certain car/vehicle engines can run on vegetable-based oils. Using this would considerably cut down on pollution. However, the downside is that it would take a huge amount of land to grow such crops in sufficient amounts to run the number of vehicles on the road. For that reason, electric vehicles could be the way forward (my dad drove an electric milk float in the 1960s!).

One of the great polluters is aviation fuel. Making people aware of their carbon footprint when they are shopping and travelling could help to reduce pollution from excessive air travel.

We could also return to suing the canal system for moving some good around the country instead of using road and rail.

Fracking, as you say WJP, is going backwards and if we are going to do that, we might as well open up all the old coal mines and get people back to work in those once-thriving coal mining communities.

What with the speed and efficiency of growing GM crops (not to eat, of course - I would never advise that) I wonder if having a vegetable oil based fuel industry wouldn't be so space consuming. Though I'm sure bibical hippies would hate that idea. So yes, electric seems the logical choice here.

I would love this world to go all Mad Max 2 and simply run out of fossil fuels. Just watch how quickly aternative power sources materialise overnight then!

And as for planes... why are things like private jets even necessary? Seriously.

Fracking seems to be Cameron's new baby, and it's possiby the most ignorant choice he's made thus far (apart from stealing from sick people of disability allowance, of course.)

Look at me in full tree-hugger mode here!
