Title: Greetings From The South West! Still Above Water... Just About!
Post by: wjp666 on February 09, 2014, 12:59:39 am
Well, it seems that Weymouth has been hit worst that most bu this demented storm. Here are some local videos taken in and around the area either by people I directy know or FB associates. Scary stuff! If you're familiar with the area you'd realise just how rare this kind of thing is down here... never seen anything like this in my 36 years spinning on thei planet.

Wow! Amazing and scary!
I live in the Fens, which is land reclaimed from the sea which was drained several hundred years ago. We are below sea level and at the moment, some areas are several feet under water. However, I live on the edge of town and have not suffered the effects of flooding. The fields a mile or so from my home are flooded and as they provide a lot of the vegetables we buy in supermarkets there is bound to be shortages and prices rises.

My heart goes out to those who have been flooded out several times, and to those who have been cut off from the world by water since Christmas. It really is the most extreme weather I can ever remember - and I lived through the 'great winter of 62/63'.

We had a surprise visit from David Cameron this week, mooching around on Chesil Beach and taking in the devastation. If I knew he was coming I'dve popped down and pushed him in.

scary, as I'm slightly further along and a reasonable height above sea level it is a lot less bad for me - though the back garden is a bit of a lake/swamp (though I'm told it used to be watercress beds a long time ago).
winds were quite impressive today too.
I wonder if it would have been better/worse if we'd had the 'polar vortex' instead.

Record winds here today... is there any end in sight for this? Need the sun to come out... I can feel spring in th air and wanna get out and enjoy it! Think I'd opt for the vortex over this any day. (That is the thing off The Adventure Game, right?)

That's strange, I'm only about 45 mins along the coast from you wjp and it's all been quiet and peaceful today!  Lovely sunny day.

Cold, damp and overcast here today. Terrible wind and rain yesterday, but not as bad as you guys over in the west. Roll on summer!

It was lovely walking to work this morning. the birds were singing and, although not actually sunny as such, it was bright. It was a bit cold but it is still February! I've noticed the mornings getting much lighter. Spring must be just around the corner. :)

We have had lots of rain, but thankfully no floods, but the winds have been crazy. It was measured at 106mph the other day.
We have lost slates from the roof. Well strictly speaking we didn't lose them, we know where they are, they're all over the garden. lol
We've had two seperate power cuts, and one of our ducks has gone missing.  :'(

I know we have been lightly treated by the weather madness and I'm very grateful, the power is back on now and we can replace the slates, but really I wish we could find our gabby duck.

Everyone here please keep safe.

Love and Rainbows to you all.

Storm.

Another pretty good day today. Took a nice long walk to survey the destruction... never seen so many downed trees. Quite a surreal wander indeed.

Awww, I hope you find you duck soon Rainbow. It's so distressing when our animals go missing or are poorly.

Thanks, but sadly we are starting to think ducky might be gone for good. It's been well over a week and still no sign of her.  :'(

Oh no, this is terrible news. I love ducks. I feed them on a weekly basis here. But all kinds of birds have a good sense of direction so don't give up hope just yet. She will probably return one day soon.
