Has the revelations of child abuse by Gary Glitter and latterly Jimmy Savile, Stuart Hall, and now (allegedly) Rolf Harris not only re-written history but actually undermined British culture?
The cultural identity of Britain is far from a readily defined concept as it is, but surely our entertainers and particularly those that are part of many people's childhoods are part of that culture. I grew up with Stuart Hall as an icon, firstly with It's A Knockout and more recently with his inimitable football commentaries. While Jimmy Savile always seemed a bit dubious, one wanted to believe he was just a typical eccentric. Who hasn't hummed tunes by Gary Glitter?! If Rolf Harris is bang to rights, it's just another part of my childhood that's been wiped away!
Yes, they're disgusting and Rolf Harris is still only alleged but it's all just so very sad!
-
God I hope Rolf is innocent. That will upset me greatly if not.

None of this interests me at all.
I can't separate the TV personality from the private citizen because to me they are the same. I believe that everyone is capable of doing unforgivable things, what saves us as a race is that most of us choose not to.
If they did the crimes then they deserve the punishments, sadly no matter what punishment they are given none of it will help their victims one bit.
I think it's all about personal perspective. I too grew up watching Stuart Hall and Rolf Harris, but what happens to them now will not change me at all, because the fact that they were part of my childhood did not and does not define me as a person in any way.
Everyone makes choices, my choice now is to think of the survivors, they are innocents in all of this.
I wish them a better future and hope that bringing all this out in the open will help them in their recovery in some way.

To say it doesn't interest you at all, you made a rather interesting and thoughtful comment. I'd love to hear your opinion on something that really interests you!

Lets talk about crop rotation. Surely that is at the centre of everyones hearts.
-
Thank you Doctor. :)
Ahh yes.. Crop rotation...
Whether to put my peas and beans where my cabbages and turnips were last season or whether to put them where my broccoli is now.
Yes, right now that kind of thing is very much at the front of my mind wjp.. How did you know?? ;D

Oh, how I miss the days of veg growing. It was one of my talents as a kid... noone had seen radishes like it on my cub scout pack on show and tell day! But now, sigh, I live in a flat. So I buy from ASDA. Just not the same. :-(

Creepy old git. He definitely should have to account for whatever he did back then if found guilty. I remember those days. As a young worker, I frequently had to suffer the unwanted, wandering hands of a variety of revolting men who thought they had every right to grab your boobs or put their hands up your skirt. I complained to my manager when an assistant manager touched me (actually, to be perfectly honest, he assaulted me) and the manager, a man of 47-odd, laughed out loud and said "What are you COMPLAINING for?? You should be flattered!". I would not really want to bother dragging these men through court. Much better would be for them to have to wear a big notice across their chest that reads 'I am a pervert'.

He really does fit the stereotypical bill of what a perv shoild look like.
