Sad news even if you're not religious?

Yes.  It's sad.  He hasn't got long.  Did you know he was a professional footballer in the 1930's? A Goalkeeper apparently.

How old is he?

Yes, it is sad for many people. However, I wish the media would leave it alone. They keeping making ridiculous statements such as "he is in a pre death state" and "his condition is notably compromised"

Why don't they let the poor bugger get on with it?

I thought he was a big right-wing for my taste but he was obviously loved world-wide.

Yes, but don't you think Castro is a bit of a capitalist?

The Pope is 84, time to rest.

I liked the way they kept saying yesterday that he was quite lucid then mentioned in passing that he couldn't actually speak!

Ok, how long does he reasonably lie there, before it starts getting REALLY awkward?

I hate to say it but I can't feel any sorrow over this. He was a bigoted old man who was happy to see women and homosexuals held back or punished because of who they were. Maybe it's part and parcel of the Catholic church, but I shan't be shedding any tears for him.

That is a brave statement Smurfboy and I agree with every word of it. It is sad for the people who loved and respected him but I will mourn the death of James Callaghan more.

By the way, if anyone needs a pope mobile with only one previous careful owner I know where there's one going cheap.

It always reminded me of that old Dave Allen sketch.  According to the programme about DA recently it actually inspired the pope to get one!

How true. If you live by your religion, you must accept it, warts and all. It is the the way most religions are. You cannot believe parts of it whilst ignoring that which you don't like or disbelieve.

Some say it is about interpretation. I say it is about a group of people trying to control the masses to their own ends.

I believe in a higher presence(?), but religions for me are corrupt-morally and spiritually, probably by people who later tailor them to their own ends.

I think as a spiritual leader and one who truly believed in rightousness he was a great man.  He also tried to bring many other people from different religions together.  However his teachings on non-contracepton has cost the lives of many thousands, if not millions of Africans.  For this history will not treat him kindly.

May his soul rest in peace.

To you and I not, perhaps. However you forget the power of the Catholic church. As I write I believe there is talk of beatifying him.

To talk against any formalised religion is to literally fart against thunder. I apologise if my flippancy causes offence, but I think the analogy suits perfectly.

I concur with your last statement.

I agree with you smurfboy.

I see Charles and the ugly one have postponed their wedding until Saturday 9th so that Charlie can go with his mum to Rome on Friday.

What will happen to all the commemorative tripe that has been made with Fridays date on. Poor shopkeepers are going to be stuck with a lot of cups and plates.

I can't stand it! The pope dies, a Royal Wedding and now a general election - ALL IN ONE WEEK!!! There is about ten years worth of news there.

I know, it's mad - like when Diana did Panorama and the war in Bosnia ended in the same week. The week after an overgrown hedge made the national news!

They can have a Greek evening.

Smashing plates with a pic of Camilla's mush on seems like the kindest thing to do in any case.

Poor woman!

What I want to know is, when Charles becomes King and he puts the crown on, what's he going to do with his ears? They'll look ridiculous.

There was a pic of Camilla in the paper in her undies last week

As for the Pope I agree with all that has been said. Do you know that
aparently religion is decreasing in the UK but increasing in America.

You have to worry about the effect religion has on America. Something's wrong when an entire country grinds to a halt because Janet Jackson's tit falls out.

And even more worryingly, what happens in the US tends to follow suit here.

A work colleague who is Catholic said there was a prophecy or something that JPII would be the 2nd last before the time of reckoning, so I am hoping the new one is a very young one.

I think Prince Charles should be the new Pope because the Pope's hat will fit over his ears much better than a crown - which will sit on top of them and make them stick out even more.

According to The Washington Post on Tuesday, gamblers can back Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi of Italy at odds of 11 to 4. "Or they can take their chances on Father Dougal Maguire of Craggy Island, Ireland, a long shot at 1,000 to 1."

Apparently a lot of people are pushing for this Nigerian cardinal - they think having a black pope will bring the Catholic Church into the 21st Century. Ironically there was a previous black pope in 496! Worrying really that the world was in some ways more advanced 1500 years ago...

Yes, it is worrying - because I think i heard somewhere that over 60% of the world's catholics are black.
