Just finished watching In The Flesh, the 3-parter on BBC3... very impressed with its overall meanings and general delivery. Anyone else watch? Gotta be the first British drama I've actually enjoyed since, well... I don't remember the last one!
And sticking with zombies... anyone been watching The Walking Dead on Fox?
-
I hate horror movies and other horror stuff. I used to read trashy horror novels when I was about 12 but then I read Rosemary's Baby and it just freaked me out. I've pretty much kept away from the genre except for a brief flirt with it as an older teen when the first Halloween came out. I also saw The Exorcist and laughed all the way through it.
-
I agree, The Exorcist is one of the funniest films ever made. It's the very colourful dialogue always brings me back to it. I'm a big horror fan... always have been. Well, when I say horror I don't mean this new-age, sparkly, romantic vampire nonsense or semi-clad teen-slasher flicks... I'm referring of course to Lee, Cushing and Price. My heroes! Horror lost its edge when the blood starting running down the screen.
-
Totally agree. I remember seeing Tales from the Crypt as a quite young child and was too scared to move!
-
Aaaah, back when horror MEANT horror... not just choppy editing in a disused warehouse.
-
I also saw The Exorcist and laughed all the way through it.
Funnily enough, that film had the same effect on me. I just don't get how people think it's scary. I even read the book and it's just as bad.
-
Horror lost its edge when the blood starting running down the screen.
Not a Fulci fan, then.
-
anyone been watching The Walking Dead on Fox?
I don't watch it on Fox, but I watch the series when it's on C5. Best thing on telly, bar Ripper Street.
-
Fulci - a Romero clone with a very questionable CV. Preferred Lenzi myself.
-
Lenzi? Sorry but Fulci is more of a legend than Umberto.
-
Can't beat a bit of Ferox though.
-
Yes you can. Try Zombie Flesh Eaters, The Beyond, House By The Cemetery and City Of The Living Dead for starters.
-
LOL at all of them for multiple reasons, I'm afraid. Give me a bit of Hammer any day.
-
I am a big Hammer fan myself and have been mopping up the recent Blu ray releases, but I cannot believe you're laughing at something like Zombie Flesh Eaters! It's a genre classic!
-
ZFE: extremely overrated. Liked the shark vs zombie fight, but that was about it. It just played like a boring version of a Romero film. Dawn Of The Dead is the best zombie film ever, in my eyes.
-
Well, each to their own, I suppose. At least we can agree that The Walking Dead is a classic series.
Do you like any Ossorio?
-
Feel ashamed I had to call up his filmography to remind me of everything he has done, lol. Tbh not seen much of his work. When a family member worked the dockyard in the eighties i remember The Blind Dead flicks doing the rounds on the import circuit but I can't even remember if i properly watched any of them. Hmm. Maybe this guy deserves my full attention.
Walking Dead season 3 finale was a bit weak last weak, I thought. Was expecting a massive confrontation but instead it ended with a whimper. Oh well.
-
I haven't even seen S3 yet because I watch it when 5 get it. I know what happens in the comic version. I'll have to wait and see it when it comes to 5.
-
Season 3 was generally awesome. Apart from the prison setting, it is really not very similar to what happens in the comic book, so there shouldn't be many spoilers.
-
No tank, then?
-
My leeeps are seeeealed!
-
Oh, OK, then...
I take it you like Nightmare City? That is one mad film!
-
Lol, I still have my very first 80's pirate copy of that one lying around here somewhere. Been on my upgrade-to-disc list for years.
I'm guessing you've seen A Serbian Film... if so, what you make of it?
-
I've never watched A Serbian Film, to be honest. I heard loads about it, same as I did The Human Centipede, but I've just never really wanted to watch it. I'm more of a vintage horror fan really, which to me is 1900 - 1989. I find that a lot of this new stuff SHOWS too much and TELLS little.
What did you make of it?
-
I have several 'aquaintances' who thrive on the new age splatter movie genre... something I really don't have much time for, so I'm always watching dross that doesn't really do it for me. Serbian Film was an odd one, however. I got the uncut version imported from Amazon.com simply because the BBFC told me i wasn't allowed to watch it... there is still part of me that lives in the 80's/90's and thinks I have top track down everything they ban/cut. (Was a BIG hobby of mine back in the day... just can't shake it.) Anyways, Serbian really shocked me, because under all the gore and (extremely) horrible content is a very, very well made/acted film indeed. It wasn't easy watching, but if you shove it out there with a more mainstream 'extreme' horror movie like, oh I dont know, Hostel or something, it really seemed to be more than exploitation and have something to say underneath it all. It's horrible stuff, but sounds worse on paper. Didn't really cause much shock with myuself but the wife walked out during a certain scene. I'd even kind-of recommened it.
Human Centipede was one of those movies I was forced to watch by a friend. Was surprised by how little gore and nastiness actually appeared on-screen, which added some weight to the premise, I guess. Not a terrible movie by any standards but nothing amazing. Sort of thing you'd watch late night on SyFy in the early hoursand instantly forget it. Centipede 2, however, was a blast... possibly the vilest film I have ever seen. You sort of end up being thankful the thing is in black and white. It's extremely entertaining because it's more of a self parody than a true example of extreme cinema. (Though if you're gonna watch it make sure it's the unrated version and not the BBFC sanitised version.) Lotsa fun that one.
However, as I've said before... give me Peter Cushing and some candle-sticks any day!
-
It's funny what you should say about collecting video nasties, because one of the last films I bought was Nightmare (AKA Nightmares in a Damaged Brain) from Code Red in the US. Still haven't watched the bloody thing yet, though. There's an uncut version of Exposé on the way from Severin in the US as well, although I guess it'll be expensive.
There are only a few nasties that are worth having. Most of them are rubbish!
-
Indeed. I still can't believe so many people rate the likes of Driller Killer so highly... most of the nasties play like pure comedy these days. I have an original ex-rental copy of Faces of Death, but all of my other 'nasties' were hilariously dodgy pirates with horrific sound and shocking picture quality... but I treasured them so dearly back in the day, lol.
I also can't believe people still get worked up about The Exorcist. As much as I respect the film, it is bloody funny!
And in case you haven't noticed by my avatar, I have a MAJOR soft spot for TTCM.
-
Yes, I noticed ol' Leatherface.
I'm glad someone else views The Exorcist as a comedy. I even read the book and it was just as bad.
I don't think I'd ever buy Faces of Death. Although, some of the footage in it taken from news programmes is genuine. I have never forgotten the copper scraping up the remains of someone's head of the floor after they'd been run over!
-
The first time I faw FOD I thought ALL the footage was real, so at my tender age back then it was quite a scary watch. Wasn't until I saw a making-of thing years later I breathed a big sigh of relief. Having said that, the stuff which IS real is still pretty gruesome.
I've also got the ultra-rare-these-days VHS 1994/5 release of Executions, which is all authentic. I don't know what was wrong with me back then... I had a morbid interest in nasty footage; not because I enjoyed watching it, but mainly because I thought there was some kind of worldwide conspiracy blocking the public from this kind of stuff and I wanted to be part of the revolution, I guess. I wont go near anything like this nowadays though... my stomach has become weaker with age. Also, I'm not certain why anyone would be entertained by this kind of thing these days. It's scary what anyone can get access to in regards to snuff-like video via the net in 2013, or more disturbingly why they would even seek it out in the first place.
-
There's too much good horror out there for me to start watching 'the real thing'.
I'm collecting all the Hammer blu rays they've been releasing.
-
I haven't started yet, but it's on my to-do list. I'd love to see a conclusive Hammer Dracula box set released.
-
Does anyone know how I can send a Zombie to my mother who lives in the River Nile?
-
petsovernight.com
-
I'm not sure if a conclusive Dracula box set could ever be released because the films are owned by different studios.
-
Indeed... but it has happened before with the likes of Elm St. And Superman. You never know. Though the first four are only really worth watching. Prince Of Darkness was me fave.
-
You seriously should watch the new Blu of Dracula: Prince of Darkness. It'll have your jaw on the floor, such is the detail. I like all the Hammer Dracula films, although they started to lose their way in the 70's. Still, if Studio Canal can put out a decent version of Satanic Rites... I'll be very happy.
-
Yes, it's on my birthday list this year. Nobody played Dracula like good old Chris.
-
Synapse have just released Hands of the Ripper in the US. I bet it's region locked! :(
-
That's the trouble, really... everything I import generally is DVD and not BluRay as my machines will play multiregion DVD but not Blu. It's about time they scrapped this whole region fiasco... I know why they claimed to do it but it still never make much sense to me.
-
Well, the porn industry don't region lock their films! ;) I also think it's a bad habit.
Just noticed that Hands of the Ripper could be 1.85:1. Damn Yankee aspect ratio!
-
It's also regarded as general fact that the porn industry, by backing BuRay. are responsible for the death of HD-DVD...much like they did with VHS and Betamax all those years ago. They are the power behind the throne.
Back when widescreen was a new thing I used to collect ONLY widescreen videos. It was a mini celebration every time I got a new one in 2.35:1, and a mini disaster I bought one in 1.85:1, or God forbid 1.77:1 (even if this was the correct aspect ratio.) When something was released in true CinemaScope it was always time to celebrate. That's one thing DVD did for this world... it got everyone watching widescreen at home, which was unthinkable just a few short years earlier.
-

But, HD-DVD deserved to die, because Blu Ray knocked it for six!
I have now learned that Hands of the Ripper is 1.66:1 and have turned into a happy, frothing mess!
-
Just finished reading The Walking Dead Compendium Vol.1. Wow... soooooo much better (and nastier... and satisfying) than the TV series. And I'm no comic book geek either. Not read a comid since Buster in the 80's.
-
I am a comic book geek! :D
-
Read Walking Dead? If not you REALLY should.
-
I keep meaning to buy the GN's, but I never get around to it. Have you heard of a series called American Vampire? I suppose that counts because they're undead!
-
Nope. I'm guessing it's worthy of mention then?
-
It's a comic by DC/Vertigo featuring all kinds of different vampires and a really bad one called Skinner Sweet! It comes highly recommended.
Clicky! (http://www.amazon.co.uk/American-Vampire-HC-Vol-01/dp/1401228305/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1376934266&sr=1-1&keywords=american+vampire)
-
just downloaded a sample of it for my Kindle... looks pretty impressive. May have to start this next.
-
It's very good stuff, plus it will have a definite end.
-
Good. I love an excellent story, but it makes it 200% better when an ending has been guaranteed from the beginning. (Yes, everyone on the production team of 'Lost', I am looking in your direction!)
Going back to movies... anyone else doing backflips over the new, extended version of The Wicker Man they unearthed this year and is getting a bluray release soon? I just can't wait to see that.
-
I'll definitely be getting this when the price lowers a bit. It's a shame the inserts are SD, but then again it's good to have a Director's Cut. It's my birthday soon and my wife has got me The Brides of Dracula and The Evil of Frankenstein on Blu :D
-
That's one awesome wife you have there.
-
I better not mention that she bought me the double Blu's of The Thing as well! Haven't even seen the prequel yet.
-
Wouldn't bother with the prequel/remake/reboot thingy. I was not very impressed. Can't hold a candle to what Carpenter did.
-
I'll watch it anyway, but The Thing is a cast iron classic. They don't really make 'em like that any more.
