60s singer Engelbert Humperdinck is to represent the Uk in this year's Eurovision song contest. He is so obscure in the UK that half the nation thought he had died over 20 years ago but in Europe his popularity has not declined since his first chart hit in 1967 (Please Release Me). Could this be why, at the age of 75, he has been selected to sing for the UK?
Moreover, are we going to see Engelbert head the line-up at Glastonbury this year - to equal Tom Jones who went down a storm at the festival a few years back?
Spoeaking of music and festivals - I'm off the the Isle of Wight in June to see Bruce Springsten and Tom Petty among others.

I must admit to doing a double-take when I heard this news on the radio - I was genuinely one of the ones who thought he was dead. Oh well, he can't be worse than some of our previous efforts.

Apparently he was very big in Eastern Europe for many years, so I imagine these are the voters the BBC is trying to appeal to. It might not be a bad idea - when Tom Jones did a series of performances in Russia about ten years back there were teenagers and twenty-somethings queuing up for tickets because of 'Sexbomb', but also women in their sixties who remembered him from years ago, as apparently he was one of the few Western European acts to make it big their during the Iron Curtain era.

It's odd but lots of strange acts seem to go big in Eastern Europe decades after fading into obscurity in the UK. Norman Wisom became a megstar and is almost God-like in Albania!
Engelbert has never held any great appeal for me (go on, you're all really surprised, aren't you!!). I thought Please Relase Me was a boring dirge and I can't even remember anything else he did. If an almost 55 year old British woman can't muster any warmth and enthusiasm for him I suppose we can conclude the Eastern Europeans will go completely wild over him!

It seems that to provide some competition for Engelbert, the Russians are entering a song by a group of very elderly ladies! Hope the results aren't too 'arresting'!

just heard the song all the way through the first time. i still like his voice, but the song is rather tepid. no chance of a win this year, even without the politics.

I read an article in the newspaper on Sunday (strangely enough, the Observer) in which Engelbert begged women not to throw their knickers at him when he is performing in the Eurovision.
Apparently, they used to do this over forty years ago.
The mind boggles.
