It's news that will leave Paddington Bear choking on his sandwiches: sales of marmalade are diving and a new, sweeter interloper - orange jam - is threatening to lure away even more fans.
Industry analysts say our love for the breakfast spread - also adored by Winston Churchill - has been waning dramatically in recent years.
In the past three alone, sales have dropped by more than eight per cent - and in one, 2006, nearly 500,000 families stopped buying marmalade altogether.
Do you prefer jam or marmalade? I prefer marmalade.
-
If you search the :o I mean internet, you will find all sorts of stories and facts about it.
They wonder why our love for marmalade is waining, well with parents serving up pop tarts, is it any wonder?
I prefer Marmalade over a prefab slab of toasted e-numbers something with a sugary filling that tastes of jam any day.
-
Yes but what is the difference between lemon curd and lemon cheese?
Orange curd is available as well too, I notice.
-
Curds have more juices in so it is more tart in flavor and are not as thick as the cheese or custards.
Lemon curd is used for allot of fillings as an alternative to jam.
-
I love lemon curd. Have you had the lemon curd muffins. Yum.
-
Have you had the lemon curd muffins.
No! Have you? Was it serious?
-
Seriously lush.
-
I am not a big fan of lemony dessert things.
-
I am if they are sweet but I don't like bitter things.
-
I like them tart.
-
Its nice to have a tart once in a while... ;)
-
Yes. A big fat one.
-
Oooo yeah, you gotta have a big one.
-
well, i just can't choose. marmalade is the best on toast, but where would we be with a cream scone if jam wasn't around?
-
You are so right there wjp. That's worthing upping ones karma for.
-
I love lemon curd, as long as it is a good quality, not-too-sweet one. I am not crazy about jam. I like Roses Lime Marmalade and good quality Ginger Conserve.

Just eat it out the jar with a spoon, yummy.
-
No that would be too much for me. I remember as a child I could eat golden syrup off a spoon and my mam was always telling me i would get sugar worms.
-
Mmmmm Black Treacle..... I used to eat that off a big serving spoon.
-
I only like the jelly marmalades, lime or lemon. Don't like the bits. Having said that, I buy a jar regularly about every four years and end up throwing most of it away. I'd forgotten all about lemon curd and may have to go and buy some now. Lemon curd muffins sound yum!
-
The 'bits' are the best part.
-
Are we still talking about marmalade?
-
I don't really eat jam or marmalade anymore. If it ain't St Dalfour fruit spread, it ain't worth the toast!
-
St Dalfour fruit spread looks well lush.
-
At least it's got a huge percentage of fruit in it, unlike usual jam or marmalade. You can find it in Holland & Barratt in all sorts of fun flavours.
-
marmalade is full of vitamin c.
-
Chocolate Marmalade isn't

marmalade is full of vitamin c.
And enough sugar to keep you going for hours!
-
another good point.
-
Chocolate marmite, now thats a combination!
-
I like Marmite with strawberry jam, or peanut butter.
-
You Like PEANUT butter!!??
-
ah, but the question when it comes to peanut butter - smooth or crunchy? i really am undecided on that one: i love 'em both, pending on what mood i'm in.
-
I only like the smooth.
-
Me too.
-
I only like the crunchy and it has to be Whole Earth organic (without any salt or other nasties).
And yes Paulham, I DO like peanut butter but not anywhere near chocolate!
-
I was first introduced to peanut butter about 8 years ago, I had gone my entire life without needing to even wonder or try it. I afterall knew what peanuts were, whar they taseted like but never had peanut butter in my life.
Well I tried it, its no different from eating a packet of KP, don't know what all the fuss is over because to me, they taste no different.
I have even tried that nutella stuff which INHO is disgusting stuff, I would rather have PB and real chocolate spread than that mullock.
-
S'funny, GC. I like a Nutrageous but that's about it quite frankly.
I'd stick a Snicker bar up Mr T's butt.
Pity da fool.
-
I had a snickers today but didn't really want it.
-
Oh! Do you want it?!
-
No thankyou.
-
Oh! Suits you!
-
No, suits you!
-
Oh! Madam, you look positively radiant!
Have you been getting plenty?
-
I bet she has... Oh!
