Title: Which Country produces the best chocolate...
Post by: $ick3nin.vend3tta on November 20, 2008, 07:13:59 pm
Hi, I was just wandering, Which Country or Where on earth I'm I likely to find the best chocolate?...

Or is that like asking, How long is a peice of string?

I have it in my head after tasting & visiting a posh shop in Vienna, Austria that this has to be one of the top places I have ever visited.

The best chocolate is produced here in the UK, just look up Green & Blacks or Hotel Chocolat!

No, I am quite serious, sir.  G&B 85% Dark rocks my little world, sir.  And, I can assure you, sir, that I am not having a tin bath.  I shower, sir.  In a shower, sir.

I suppose it depends upon how you define "best" as the opening post asked.

I have been in the Chocolate business all my life and beyond a doubt they make the best chocolate in Belgium.

My husband travels a lot and brings me back some chocolate of whatever country he's been to. I think different country are good at different types of chocolate. I LOVE Swiss milk chocolate but Swiss plain is too sweet. Belgian chocolates are amazing but bars of Belgian chocolate I'm not so keen on, except for Galler which is just in a league of its own. On the subject of who makes the worst chocolate, I enjoy cat chocolate drops more than some Polish chocolate I've had.

I think we're lucky to be in a country where all these different kinds of chocolate are available. Although it is a shame that sometimes the quality isn't as good as it could be (thanks to our liberal definition of 'chocolate').
You could ask which country produces the best cocoa (Venezuela of course), then which country does the best with that ingredient. I'm sure the 70% crowd would have many points to make on what is 'the best', I say try all different varieties and if you like cheap UK milk chocolate the best that's fine too.
My contender for worst is either American chocolate or those bars which seem to be born out of odd 'flavour combining' (did anyone try Rococo's Sea Salt artisan bar...).

I tend to like the 40% and 62% milk chocolate from Hotel Chocolate, but the G&B milk isn't too bad.  My favourite stuff is usually single estate dark stuff from Hotel Chocolate, especially their own Rabot Estate stuff.  I find the Belgian and Swiss stuff a bit sickly.
