A Muslim said he is suing Tesco for religious discrimination because he was asked to handle crates of alcohol in a warehouse.
Mohammed Ahmed, 32, was employed at the supermarket giant's Lichfield depot in September last year for a job that included transporting various goods on fork-lift trucks.
The Saudi Arabia national told a tribunal he had not been told when he started the job that he would be handling alcoholic drinks - a task he said was against his Islamic beliefs.
-
Perhaps he should have made his objection to touching alcoholic drinks clear BEFORE he accepted the job.
However, in law, he is actually entitled not to handle alcohol if it goes against his personal beliefs.
Tesco (and other companies offering similar jobs) will have to be more aware of this in the future and ensure they mention this at staff interviews.
-
I'm surprised that the law allows for that. I can understand someone not wanting to drink it or even have it splash on their bodies but how can handling bottles/boxes/crates of the stuff be an issue?
-
I reckon he got the job deliberately so he could sue at a later date. It's pretty obvious he would be moving alcohol. Are Tesco supposed to inform possible employers that they may have to move nuts incase they have a nut allergy?
-
That's actually a good question. Even the smell of peanuts can induce anaphalxia

Are vegetarians exempt from moving packages containing meat?

I'm filling out my Tesco application now.

Theoretically yes. It depends on how well you could argue your case. I would expect sensible people who apply for a job in a grocery warehouse to realise that they would be shifting food and drink around.
This bloke is a chancer and should be sent packing.

Packing crates of alcohol?

It's his human rights, innit?
Try this on in a Muslim country and see where you get.

I imagine refusing to work with alcohol in Saudi would go down quite well.
