There's a Waitrose just opened in Newcastle so I thought I'd go have a look yesterday. It is more expensive than M&S.
-
My son works part-time for Waitrose. They are very good employers. The company is run as a private partnership. There are no shareholders as such. After a qualifiying period, employees become partners and all profits, after allowing for re-investment, are shared between the staff. He gets a good bonus every year (about £1,500). They products are expensive, but their own label fresh foods are very good quality. I don't buy groceries there, but I do get bread and ready meals sometimes.
-
A good shop though Lou. We have one in Newark. They are quite posh.
-
There are 2 (I think) in Edinburgh. I got lost trying to find them last year. :(

Harvey Nichols is posh but I don't buy my groceries there neither.
-
I'm a Sainsbury's man. They have the prettiest cashiers.
-
I like how Morrisons employ all the retired people. They have better manners in our local Morrisons than in Sainsburys.
-
That's the same here too Lou.
-
Waitrose replaced Somerfield in the suburb where I work last year. Both are expensive but I think Waitrose has the quality to back it up. I'm quite surprised they have opened in Newcastle; as far as I knew they were very much concentrated on the South, and to a lesser extent the Midlands.
-
We had one in Durham too but I'm not sure if it is still there.
I'm not impressed with Waitrose food, the coleslaw tastes soapy and the crab pate tasted so bad it went into the bin. Not a patch on m&s.
-
I havent been in yet but I'll be having a look tomorrow. Do they just sell own brand stuff like M&S used to?
-
No, they sell branded too, but their own brand food has a good reputation.
-
Not enough to stop profits dropping.
-
Can't wait to hear if you bought anything kev.

According to the Metro yesterday, all the foodies are switching to Lidl and Aldi to beat the dreaded Credit Crunch. (I've looked in the cereal aisle of several supermarkets and can't find it anywhere...)
-
Ha Ha haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
-
I've never been in an Aldi or Lidl. Are they worth visiting if I can find one?
-
Yes, definitely worth visiting. But they look strange at first - you have to go a few times to get used to them.
-
What we talking about!?
-
Aldi and Lidl.
-
scotland full of them, it mainly all German stuff, but there do have very nice meat. farmfoods for forzen food!
Waitrose are alright nothing great. but still to costly I have been inside in Edinburgh I believe there two:
* down from the Western general H
* Camron toll shopping central
somerfield now being owned by Co -op. this will make our Somerfield in local shopping central under control by 5 party and its BADLY needs a refit! ( really it needs it its like the 1985 when it opened:
Pestro:
Safeway
Morrison
Somerfiled
Co-op
I believe there tesco in midlands some where never been refited
-
Tesco in Walsall was like that for years 623. It still had late 1970s signage inside; it was almost like a museum. It was finally redone as a Tesco Metro about two years ago.
The reason so many Somerfield stores look so tatty is because they are old Kwik Save stores that were hastily converted without a proper refit. Now that the Co-Op have taken over they'll all be refitted as the Somerfield brand is going altogether.
-
My Local Somerfield ( in the shopping central ) was never a kwick save,
-
Hmm... maybe it was just always a tathole then!

ISn't it still 1982 in Walsall
-
I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised.
-
I heard Nottingham is in the Dark Ages still.
-
Only in the caves.
-
Well I went in Waitrose and it seemed ok but more like a smaller version of M&S. I didn't buy anything.
Speaking of Aldi and Lidl, Aldi is deffo the best, their Moser Roth chocolate range is lovely, especially the dark choc with orange and almonds. Lidl I find can be rather poor or standard quality.
-
What do you think of Tesco introducing all these discount brands that are normally found in Lidl and Aldi? I presume they're trying to appeal to their market, but personally if I'm going to shop in Tesco and need to save a few pennies I'll buy Tesco own brand rather than a no-name.
-
They may have "no name" but Patersons make Lidl's oatcakes and other well known manufacturers also make for them and hide behind the Lidl label.
-
Never heard of them.
-
What about *cough* Patersons?

Asda beats Tesco with it's 'smartprice' brand anyway. A lot of my household basics are Asda smartprice. Infact overall I find Asda cheaper than Tesco for most things.
-
I like Asdas smartprice products too.
-
Never heard of them.
Where was the difficult part??
-
The part where I put 2 "t's" in the original spelling and felt obliged to change it in case I confused anyone?
-
Ah, hadn't spotted that :-[ Given my track record I couldn't blame you for thinking I was just being a pedant!
-
S'aright!
