Title: Cadbury Dream - phased out?
Post by: Scarlet_Salome on June 24, 2008, 08:33:30 am
Is Cadbury Dream being phased out? I've noticed it's no longer in the new boxes of Heroes (replaced by Bourneville) and I can't seem to find it in any shops round by me in Oxford (not sure about back home in Bloxwich though).

On a similar note, could anyone recommend any really delicious, good quality white chocolate? I had my last Guylian mini white rice crisp egg the other day and it was lovely compared to the overly sweet and sickly taste very commercial white chocolate often tends to have. Having said that, White chocolate seems to be ever more difficult to get hold of due to the proliferation of the dark chocolate/health food fad.

Dream hasn't been discontinued, but it is harder to find than most Cadbury bars. Availability might vary regionally; I always seem to see it in London, but less so up here.

Is it just white chocolate or can you get white choc with nuts?

I'm pretty sure they will do a white choc and nuts variety.

I had a Hotel Chocolate Rocky Road to Caramello egg and personally I didn't find it all that spectacular, but it might have been because a) I waited about 3 months to try it and b)my student house gets horribly hot and I think has a tendency to sap chocolate of any flavour. I can't seem to find anywhere to store it! I'll see if I can get to a branch when I get back to the Midlands and a normal house though.

Thanks for the Lidl tip though: I'd totally forgotten about them, they're often brilliant for interesting continental chocolate and that kind of thing. Is their white chocolate bar very nice?

Out of interest, what do people think about the changing of Cadbury Heroes Dream and Crunchie for Bourneville and Eclairs? Myself, I really enjoy the Dream and especially Crunchie, but I do understand sometimes one desires dark chocolate. Its rather ironic considering Bourneville was actually removed from Roses though.

I didn't know they'd put Eclairs in - I likes Eclairs, I does. Not so keen on Bournville; much prefer Dream. But I'm still getting over the disappointment of them taking the little Picnics out :(

They have loads of kinds but I got the organic one with vanilla and a hint of toffee or something like that

I really enjoy Dream too, especially as its quite rare to have white chocolate in those kinds of general assortments. You know, up until not long ago Bloxwich Woolworths still had mini picnics in their pic n' mix heroes tub. God knows how old their stocks were but great for those who like the old varieties!

I know!
So is the consensus that Hotel Chocolate's stuff (including their white chocolate) is very nice? And thus I didn't really like the egg and found it bland because of what my house did to it? I was never sure if it was that or whether Hotel Chocolate was just a hyped-up, commercial, self fulfilling prophecy. I've always been curious, and where better to ask than here!

Personally I've never had a bad chocolate from there; but it doesn't last, so the heat in your house won't have done it much good.

Thank you! I've always wondered. Ah well, looks like I might never get to experience the proper taste of their chocolate.

You could buy it and eat it as soon as you come out of the shop; not that I'd ever do that, obviously...

You even get free samples in the shops!  Well I did anyway...

Lucky you! They didn't offer in the branches I've been in.

I don't think I could ever bring myself to eat it as I came out of the shop. I only eat chocolate very, very, very occasionally, though I do love the stuff.

No I didn't but I did return a couple of hours later!  Having just checked their website I don't see half the products there that they had in the shop.  They had lots of stuff there that was quite reasonable but the website is pretty pricey.

When you returned did the assistants remove all the freebies from the shelves?

Well you know how it is.  You stuff yourself with freebies then when you go back for a second time the assisants whisper to one another " the greedy bitch is back, watch her i bet she buys nothing".

I'm completely obsessed with the stuff, especially with seeking out new, random and exciting products. I just like to watch my figure, plus I don't handle any kind of sugar well. But if anything, living mainly on cabbage and broccoli makes one appreciate chocolate so much more when one does have it!

Don't blame you for taking advantage of the free samples; no matter how haughty the assistants might seem, what else are they for? Once, some time ago, in my eating days, I kept walking through New Street station all afternoon cuz they were sampling Baileys Glide. Saved having to pay money in the pub that night: we were already drunk!

Just to put the record straight, there was a lady coming round with a tray offering free samples.  I had one - ONE - small piece.  When I returned later to actually buy some of the stuff as Bounty's been raving about it for ages, there was no sign of the freebies.  I would definitely buy it again but unfortunately I don't know of a shop in the south of England - must check the website.

I would have had loads but then I don't have GC's willpower or her wonderful petite figure.

I know I've seen Hotel Chocolat shops in Cambridge, Windsor, Reading, St Albans, Milton Keynes, Exeter, Southampton and Plymouth. And no doubt there'd be numerous ones in London. If anything, it seems like the North where there are none to be found.

Oooh thanks, Southampton is near enough.  It's just that Bounty has talked about it a lot and the first shop I saw was in York so I assumed there were more 'oop' North.

We have one in Gateshead metrocentre.

It seems to be harder to find now, maybe it will be discontinued. Cadbury Dream With Strawberry was the best, but I'm almost certain that has gone (despite the fact you can still get the ice cream lolly version).

I read a while ago in a magazine that dark choclate is not actually good for you as the good bits make it taste too bitter so get taen out during the process. I don't eat Bournville/Lindt/etc because it's good for me anyway! I eat it because I like nearly all chocolate (if it's not got nuts in it, no allergy, just don't like them). Tesco Value dark chocolate is not nice on it's own (and no I don't usually buy that) but is when it's put in truffles. But Bournville in truffles is not nice. I know 'cause I made them.

Back to white chocolate, kids sized Dream bars (like the Dairy Milk animal bars except white with no amimals) are often on sale in Supercig's stores. But I prefer the harder to get hold of one (the bigger one).

...I have to buy new pants, it's that good! :)
