Im not a member of the god squad, but I have decided to give something up for lent, and this for me is diet coke. I drink far too much for it to be healthy so its going.
I started today because I went back to work today and it was cool, except I have one mahoosive headache. I am hoping it is just a caffiene thingy.
I am also giving up swearing, woo hoo.
Seeing as Easter can be any time from the 22nd March to 19th April it's between six and 10 weeks.
Lent is 6 and a half weeks - a period of 40 days (not counting Sundays since Sundays commemorate the Resurrection). It all starts tomorrow on Ash Wednesday.
I'm giving up chocolate this year and I'm going to attempt to give up diet coke, but I'm not too sure if I could stand giving up both at the same time! So, today I'm having a feast of chocolate before 6 and a half weeks without it.
It would be no chocolate until Easter, which is March 27th this year.
I've given up chocolate before and it can be rough going for the first couple days, but after that it gets a lot easier - if you aren't too tempted by Easter eggs, that is.
Bounty - The period of Lent is 40 days (Sundays aren't counted), which starts on Ash Wednesday (tomorrow) and ends on Easter. So, to answer your question, it's both
Chocolate Chick - Some good things to curb a sweet tooth are marshmallows, jelly beans (starburst joosters are good), tea, fruit, nuts, and yoghurt. I'm sure you'll manage just fine and then you can dig in on Easter morning
Thanks sillyank. Some good tips there. I love fruit so I should be ok with the sweet cravings, grapes should be a good substitute! Looking forward to Christmas morning, might ask my fella to get me a Lindt chocolate bunny
Starburst joosters are really yum, had them over christmas and I was pleasantly suprised!
Christmas morning Choccy Chick? Surely he won't make you wait that long!
I am doing okay, two days now without diet coke and no swearing at all.
Last night I felt sick and headachey, but today I am feeling a little better, just extremely tired.

No, I'm confused now. Isn't Ash Wednesday always the second Wednesday in February? If so how can it end at Easter and be 40 days, if easter moves about so much?
I'm not being clever, I realy don't understand. If Ash Wednesday can move about like Easter, that explains it.
I dont understand either, all i know is I cant drink pop, or swear, and its killing me!!!
I delete more than I type these days :(
Oh, and im also now suffering from insomnia, last night I woke up craving pop like you wouldn't believe.
Sorry about the pop withdrawl, Salsa. Must be even worse since yo9u can't swear about it, but at least you can eat chocolate!
And Bounty - the dates of Ash Wednesday vary from year to year.
Opps...I might Easter morning! Silly me!
I had 2 Rolo's last night from my boyfriends pack and that's it now. No chocolate or biscuits until Easter Morning.
My mum is giving up chocolate and cigarettes. The chocolate will be til Easter morning but I think the cigarettes will be a long term thing.
pop withrdrawl updates...
My head still hurts, my eyes ache, and am achey, but my skin is very clear. Think its all the water im drinking.

But surely not by as much as Easter, so there's still a discrepancy.
A discrepancy in what?
The date Easter falls on is determined by the Gregorian calendar, or by the formula seen on this page: http://aa.usno.navy.mil/faq/docs/easter.html
Ash Wednesday is always 46 days before Easter, no matter what. Thus, the gap between the two never varies, but rather the date of Easter does - which shifts the date of Ash Wednesday accordingly.
Hope that makes everything clear
only another 44 to go!
Day 1 yesterday and it went well
yay! im not alone
But I still have the no caffeine headache. Starting to think it might be something else now.
I am going to count the Sundays else I might just pig out on choc and that would be against the point, for me anyway.
Its Day 3 and it's still going well. My boyfriend had some Herhsey Kisses and Lindt Lindor last night and he insisted on giving me one. so I have put these in a bag along with my prized Pink Yorkie and my Caramac Kit Kat (thank you Hilary!)
Thank you for explaining to Bounty, Salsa. Sundays don't count towards the 40 days, so thus the total period is 46 days.
I don't appreciate being compared to George W. Bush and am quite offended. Just because I know about the religion I was brought up with doesn't mean that I'm a religious fanatic or a Bush supporter (I voted for Kerry and am proud of it). I actually do not attend church anymore, but mainly participate in Lent to give moral support to my mom - who is also giving up chocolate. So, no that you're enlightened about my situation, there will be no need for personal attacks when asking for clarification on a given topic.
Anyway, enough of my rant, I usually count Sundays too, Choc Chick, else I'd probably give up after the first weekend!
I am still going well with the no chocolate for lent regrime. My boyfriend has been eating it in front of me but I have been strong and said no. When I have wanted something I have had some starbursts and fruity polos. But all in all I am suprising myself each day!
How's everyone else getting on?
I gave up cigarettes and it's dead easy.
Was this for lent or did you do this as a personal thing before?
Bah, takes a tough girl to give something up properly. Especially when its something you love.
Next year im giving up men, oh god, I already did.
Tis all about personal choices. As I said in the other thread, we all don't have to be the same or life would be a less interesting place.
And gives the diet a kick start!
That would be true if I stopped eating wine gums
I am not giving up chocolate for good, just for lent. I want to see how things are without it and if I can resist it.
Same as me with fizzy pop and swearing, lol
It has been hard, but my skin has cleared amazingly and also i dont feel as tired or bloated.
( says the girl who is up at 2am and has to be in work at 8am)
Just for final clarification, if anyone is still unsure:
Lent is the period between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday (this year on 9th February and 27th March respectively), and is 46 days long, as stated by sillyyank. It is, as said, to represent the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert, and is set in the run-up to Easter to help calm and prepare for the Easter celebration. The reason for the difference in nuber of days between the actual length (46 days) and the symbolic length (40 days) is because Lent was devised during a historical period when Sundays were feast days. Thus, because Sundays would have been the one day everyone ate well, Lent was "suspended" on the six Sundays during Lent, so to make sure that the actual period of abstinence wasn't lost an extra 6 days were added to the period.
This means, then, that on all of the Sundays between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday you may consume/do what you have given up, just for the day, and it doesn't matter, because those days don't count.
I hope that clears it all up.

Yes you can on a sunday but I know that myself and a few others are including sundays as well. If I start having choc on a sunday I will pig out on it too much.
Basically, I have no willpower.
But, since I stopped drinking Fizzy pop my skin is much clearer.
Same here, very little will power. It's all or nothing. I can keep things up for a prolonged period, like giving up chocolate for lent, but if it was on and off I wouldn't be able to stick to it.
It's going well though, better than I thought. Think thats because I know I will be having it again soon.
I just got given a suitcase sized box of Galaxy Hot Chocolate sachets - great for this weather!
I have had wine gums today choc chick and some strawberry bonbons.
Bon bons are yum lou. Have you tried the apple ones?
Went to Cybercandy last night and brought a bag of chocolate and cream cremesavers hard candy. Very much the same as our Campinos. Are they are very tasty. Had to out them on the top shelf before I ate the whole bag! They also do them in a soft chewy varity and they are yum! Have you have these sillyank?
I can't remember where I got them. Think they were in a packet with yellow ones and pink ones.
I had the toffee ones from a pic and mix selection. Think they are called toffee crumbles.
I like strawberry tart.
I GIVE UP SUICIDE BOMBING FOR LENT
I give up reading your posts.
THATS NOT VERY NICE.
I MAKE A JOKE ABOUT MY SELF AS ITS WHAT EVERYONE THINKS OF PEOPLE WITH MY SKIN. WHATS WRONG WITH JOKES ?
