I think there was a thread about this but can't find it. I was reminded of the winners by the repeat of Have I Got News For You.
Firstly, the nominations were provided by the organisers. Secondly, you then had to vote for the top three from the nominations specified. So, the winners were:
The Queen
Robbie Williams
Mrs Thatcher.
WHAT????
Well, obviously the Queen is going to be the greatest living Briton but what are we measuring? Those that bring the greatest happiness? Those that are the most use? Those that contribute the most?
I could think of perhaps half a dosen people who spend all their spare time doing good works for others with no recognition or reward. One couple I can think of have spent the last 20 years or so making life better for victims of the Chenynoble disaster.
That is greatness.
Did I really write 'dosen'??
I agree Smurfy. For me, Thatcher started the rot that has spread through this country like mould on bread.
Plus I don't think Churchill would qualify, being a little bit on the dead side.

Hee Hee
What a shame they have to be 'living' Britons.
It is a sad but true fact that most of our really great Britons are now dead and gone.
Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth the First, Isambard Kingdom Brunell, George Stephenson, Wordsworth, John Constable....
Oh the list used to be endless, and now the best we can do is Robbie Williams?????
Oh help we're in real trouble as a Nation aren't we?

Her Majesy The Queen is arguable. I'm not going to quibble with her nomination.
Mrs Thatcher? Greatest in what way? So she was greater than Sir Winston Churchill? I don't think so.
Robbie Williams. As in Robbie Williams the singer, formerly of Take That?
Ermmmm... Yeah OK.
Bounty, I'm going to say this slowly...
Greatest
LIVING
Briton.
