This is a ceremony that is local to me. The village of Stilton is a few miles down the A1 and we always go to this ceremony. It is great fun and it attracts quite a lot of celebrities (decent ones - Robbie Coltrane this year).
My friend lives in Stilton and we ended up at the Stilton Cheese pub for a great afternoon's drinking after the rolling.

So which one of them is you Oldspice?

I know nothing about this at all.
Is it a race and how many teams take part if it is?
Is it a real cheese they're using, and if it is what happens to it afterward? Is it thrown away or does it get eaten?
And are the wigs compulsory?

-
It's an annual ceremony held in the village of Stilton, near Peterborough and yes, they do use real cheeses and they do have teams entering, and individuals. I don't know what happens to the cheese afterwards but it's to celebrate the famous Stilton cheese.
There are lots of strange rituals in the villages here abouts. In one, they have the world famous conker championships and in another village, the ancient pig racing day is held (people sit on the pigs and raceeach other).
In the small town of Whittlesey a few miles away, the strawman ceremony was reinstated about ten years ago. That goes back centuries.
This is the Fens where we say Fenland born, Fenland bred, long in the arm and strange in the head!
I am a Londoner origianlly!!!

The one with the best legs of course!

Wigs????? They are not wigs. That is the colour your hair goes from years of eating stilton cheese.

Thanks Loulou.
Note to self "Stay right away from Stilton cheese in that case".
Oldspice, thanks for the info. Pig racing sounds brilliant!
And Cherry that link is fascinating.
Thankyou so much.

In the Dales they say
"Yorkshire born and Yorkshire bred. Strong in the arm and thick in the head." LOL I am starting to think there is some similar saying for lots of areas.

My Grandad is from North Yorkshire so there is a bit of thick headedness in me somewhere.

I would stay away from cheese altogether as you were so horrified by rennet!
-
Thanks for your thoughtfulness Goldencup.
I really appreciate it.

I did a lot of looking at my local Tesco and not all cheese has rennet from animal sources in it. If you choose one which says "suitable for vegetarians" on it then it has been made using a vegetable based rennet.
Which is a great relief to me because I absolutely LOVE cheese!
