Title: Wearing the veil
Post by: oldspice on October 15, 2006, 03:34:54 pm

What do you think about this teaching assistant wearing her veil row? I heard that when she was interviewed, she did not wear a veil. Once she got the job she insisted on wearing it.

Also, this school is full to the brim with Muslim pupils but it is a Church of England primary school!

I am very sad to say this but I am getting very weary of all this stuff. I used to be the most tolerant of people but I find I am being marginalised  and ground down by all sorts of people demanding their rights and all I seem to do is grind on, working hard and not even being able to get decent treatment on the NHS.

If I owned a shop and a woman wearng a veil came in I would ask her to remove it or leave. All the time I see young kids being told to remove their baseball caps and hoodies as if there is any trouble in the shops the CCTV camera cannot get a good pic of their faces.

Some of them even have a mesh over the slit so you've no chance of seeing who's under there. They could be Osima Bin Ladan

I cannot communicate with someone if I cannot see their face. I certainly don't want to sit on a train full of them.

Exaxctly - you can't go into a bank or a building society with a bike helmet on, so why should this be any different?

If an English woman travelled to certain Middle Eastern countries and walked around in a short skirt and sleeveless top, she'd be spat at or worse. Europeans emigrating to the Middle East would have to respect the traditions of those countries. Why should it be any different the other way around?

That's true. A colleague of mine is teaching in a Muslim Arab country and when she goes out she has to be covered from head to toe. She is teaching at an English school there and the English community are housed in a special enclave. Within that enclave they can dress how they wish and they live a really good life. When they step outside that enclave, they have to repect the laws and traditions of that country. They cannot claim cultural or racial diversity.

In Leeds I've often seen women walking around dressed head to toe wearing veils. Sometimes you can't tell which end is the front and which is the back.

Do some of them walk backwards then?

What I mean is when they are stood still, sometimes from a distance it looks like their back, but then they start walking towards you and you realise it's their front.

I've never seen any wearing white. I only see them wearing black if I go into Sunderland or Newcastle city centres but around where I live there isn't any.

There's one man who sometimes wears orange, green and purple robes. He certainly stands out in the crowds.

My husband rudely states that some of the women are so pig ugly they are forced to cover up. I tell him that's not a very PC remark.

I saw a woman on the news talking about her decision not to wear the full veil and I must admit I thought 'wrong decision'. Even if she wasn't a Muslim she should have considered it.

I read it's not a requirement of Islam to wear the veil, that a headscarf is enough to satisfy religious requirements.

That sounds a perfectly reasonable compromise.
