True. Don't get caught out putting first class stamps on your Xmas cards this year though because if they are more than 5mm thick you have to pay 44p.

One for larger items.

Definitely going to be chaotic tomorrow. I already tested my parcels last week and everything i use to send on a first class stamp has gone to 44p. Everything that used to cost me 44p has gone to £1.00. But everything that used to cost £8.00 has dropped to £5. Yay. Swings and roundabouts but definitely better for sending large items.

This means we will probably have to go to the post office to send every bloody letter till we get used to it!

They have a plastic guide on the counter and if your letter fits through it can go on a first class stamp but if not it's 44p.

Who can be arsed with all that? I reckon most people will just use a first class stamp and hope for the best.

Yes but if it gets to the person you are sending it to they will have to pay £1.05 to get it or it will be returned to you as long as your address is on the back.

Will they actually make anyone pay?
Title: Royal mail
Post by: loulou on August 20, 2006, 08:18:24 pm
Yes they do already. Many times i have had to tip up £1.05 to get a letter that has been sent to me with insufficient postage. That's how they make their money. Unfortunately the postman is not allowed by law to take the money from you so they bring you a card and you have to either go to the main depot with the cash or send the card off with £1.05 worth of stamps stuck to it.

I've had this happen a few times. An idiot seller on ebay sent me something with insufficiant postage.

That's happened to me a few times. I have complained each time and got a refund from the seller, but it does make me think that not everyone either gets caught or complains.

i'm quite surprised the Post Office is doing this especially with most households having a computer..or maybe this is why they are ??

i know a handwritten letter or card is so much nicer to get but the likes of my Mum who has all her children/grandchildren in another country will just find this so expensive..i've told her to forget sending cards to us adults and just send the little ones interactive cards via the internet..i'm sure they would have much more fun with these and it'll save her money..

It's because the Royal Mail are losing their monopoly on deliveries under £1 and they're adusting their prices to take account of it.

Someone from ebay sent me a payment with no stamp. I've just paid £1.09 at the depot to get the letter. The postman didn't bring it to my door, he just gave me a card and informed me I had a letter with insufficient postage paid on it and I had to go collect.

I would ask them to pay for that before I sent their item out!

I know this is a silly question but who else deliveries letters other than royal mail?

Private courier companies - although they charge quite a lot. They are better value when sdending parcels.

Actually, if you are sending a single item like a card, 44p is not a great deal of money if it gets delivered on time. It's only when you have to send 100 Christmas cards that it gets expensive. And my daughter's car insurance took 7 DAYS to arrive even though it was sent first class. That's terrible.

You can send things through Parcel Force or similar, but in the past only if it cost over £1 to send.

City Link, TNT and Business Post charge around £5.35 for each parcel which is really good if you are sending lots of big items that royal mail would charge £5 and over for and the private couriers obtain signatures for each delivery. It doesn't work out good for small packages though.
