What about Aztec Bars .... think I remember a comedian saying something about these not long ago ..... these were gorgeous ... anyone remember them ?
-
They were briefly revived for the Millennium but have now since returned to Choccy Heaven.
-
A cross between mars and Milky Way. i remember when they came out and didn't think much of them then. When they were revived i didn't bother to try one. They have a bit of a cult following but not on this Forum.
-
I quite liked Aztecs, and in fact had one a couple of weeks ago. I was amazed to discover them for sale at Borth Golf Club in Wales (don't ask). They were in date too!
-
Borth really is like the end of the earth isn't it! I used to have to go through it on the way to Aberystwyth.
-
What were you doing in that area then Smurfy?
-
My husband used to live in Wales before they closed it down.
-

That's classified information.
-
smurfy haven't you told GC of your window cleaning days in Aberystwyth?
-
Oh Smurfy, do tell.

You should see the things I see...

Why don't folk pull the curtains?
-
They want to get caught. Bloody exhibitionists.

I knew a woman who refused to hang her underwear on the line in the garden because she didn't want people looking at it but in warm weather she used to take her washing in wearing only her bra and pants!!!
-
Theres' a girl opposite me insists on getting dressed and undressed in front of her window.

My nan's neighbour does that but she is a drunk, which probably explains it.

Presumably she thought they looked better on her than off her.

But how come the Welsh get all the Aztecs?
-
Think about it - Wales is a bit behind the times generally, so whereas we got the Aztec bar back in 2000, it's only just returned there. The last time I was there I was watching Corrie and Ena Sharples had just been crushed under the viaduct.
-
Last time I was there, you couldn't buy a pint on Sundays.
-
My brother was once working in Wales and went into a chip shop and asked for mince pie and chips. The pie was sweet mince. What's all that about then?
-
A mince pie is one of those sweet little pies you get at Christmas, is it not?

Well it is in my book. Perhaps Lou's brother meant a beef and onion pie or something.

To me mince pie is a sweet mince pie, but if I saw it on the menu in the chippy I'd think it meant meat.
-
I think I know what you mean, we call them meat patties. They are the size of a mince pie but they have minced meat inside.
-
If someone asked me for a minced meat pie and chips I would natrually think they meant savoury mince.
-
If I go to any bakers here a savoury mince pie is called a mince pie and a sweet mince pie is called a sweet mince pie.
-
Sounds sensible enough to me.
-
A pattie is something we get from the chip shop and is either cheese or corned beef and potato in batter.loulou38848.8894444444

No, that's a 'fry-it'
-
Arrrghh! I can't stand it when chip shops call them potato fritters or potato 'Fry-Its'. They're SCALLOPS!
-
I would call deep fried corned beef or spam in batter a fritter. I used to LOVE fritters years ago but wouldn't dare eat them now.
-
Arrrghh! I can't stand it when chip shops call them potato fritters or potato 'Fry-Its'. They're SCALLOPS!
No. A scallop is a small fishy thing.

That is SO wrong. Scallops are made of potato. Nothing else.

THis could run and run! regional differences in food and drink are very interesting.
For example, can anyone from 'up north' (say Manchester or nearby) tell me whay a filled roll is a barm cake?
And you know those horrible pickled gherkins they sell in chip shops? Well in certain parts of London, they are called walleys - is this so in any other regions?

We also have pineapple fritters and pea fritters as well as spam. Like Smurfy, I thought a scallop is a shellfish.

I must say having lived in both the West and East Midlands, scallops are definitely far more common in the West Midlands. You can get them in the East but they are a) invariably known as potato fritters or fry-its and b) you have to wait for them to be cooked, whereas any decent chippy over this way has them ready when you go in.

And if you are from Liverpool you would call a ham roll a ham batch
-
Then there are cobs.....I was very confused when offered one by my mother-in-law - I had no idea what I was getting!
-
I thought people had cobs everywhere?

Yes, when I was a student working in a bakery we had crusty cobs (in LOndon). They were like the top of a cottage loaf.
-
Some say baps, but to me there's a subtle difference between the two. Cobs are crustier than baps.

Ok Miss Pedant - I meant in the chippy they are made of potato and nothing else.

The pedants are revolting.
