Title: Smoking ban
Post by: chocoboo on February 15, 2006, 09:40:36 am
Well done parliament. They've actually passed a law that doesn't cost me anything and makes me more healthy.  A great day in history. At last I can have a drink and a meal without breathing those smelly smokers' pollution.

Another step towards total governmental control. First compulsory ID cards now a smoking ban. Soon the inevitable FURTHER tax increases to cover the lost revenue. Not to mention the destruction of small businesses such as independant pubs.

We laugh at films like Logans Run and Gattaca, but we are not far off.

If the government and its supporters didnt make me so angry i would find the whole thing laughable.

Is this really about control - or safety? Where is MY control, as a non-smoker, if people can puff away right next to me and give me cancer whenever they like? Too many people think that just because they want to do something, they should be able to. So what if I want to have hardcore S and M sex in the middle of the supermarket? Or stand outside a school sacrificing live chickens? Neither of these will give anyone cancer, but I bet you no one would want their kids exposed to it.

As for independent pubs being put out of business, it's not as if people can go and spend their money at a big chain pub instead where they can smoke; they won't be able to smoke anywhere!

Post by: lemoneye on February 15, 2006, 01:03:42 pm

Do you HONESTLY believe it is about safety? At the same time as the ID cards pass the commons?

Can't smoke in a pub means - won't go to a pub...

Some will support and some won't. In my opinion this is another scary turn made in the road - i do not like the direction we are moving in.

What is next? Land re-apportionment?

Title: Smoking ban
Post by: smurfboy on February 15, 2006, 01:11:04 pm

Well yes, I do honestly believe it's about safety. The government makes huge amounts in tax from duty on cigarettes and alcohol, so it's not as if discouraging people to smoke, and therefore spend less time in the pub, will be of any financial benefit to the government.

So if you don't think it's about safety, what do you think it's about? A sinister conspiracy to take control of the people?

I think it's a Health & Safety issue. Employees in pubs/clubs have a right to have their health and safety protected by law. It's all very well for smokers to damage their own health by choice but they should not be allowed to continuously damage the health of others.

I feel sorry for children whose parents are heavy smokers. What protection are they getting???

Title: Smoking ban
Post by: loulou on February 17, 2006, 12:57:25 am
I don't smoke and never have. I don't like my hair and clothes to smell of smoke but I don't object to anyone having a cigarette near me as long as I am not eating at the time. A lot of people like a cigarette when they are having a drink so would it not be easier to have a smoking area like a snug.

It still leaves the issue of protecting the health of employees who work in pubs and clubs and other public places. They may not mind now, but if they get lung disease in future years they will wonder why their health was not protected by law.

I'm very much in favour of this ban.  For one thing my husband is a bar manager and asthmatic so it will help his health.  On Valentine's Day we went to a pub intending to have a meal but it was so smokey (cigar smoke in particular) that we didn't bother.  We will be much more likely to visit pubs after this ban.

Lemon eye must smoke cos he seems to think its ok for him to do as he pleases but its not ok for non smokers to have clean air.

If you dont like it go and live in a third world company where cigs are dirt cheap.

I do not like being in a smoke environment at all!

I have to admit I have often felt irritated by the smokers at work who seem to have a god given right to tae a "fag break", because they can't function without a nicotine hit. Yet non smokers, like me, don't seem to have a "contemplate my navel break" when we like. We just get the pleaure of holding the fort for the smokers.

Not only am i a non smoker, but i am also NOT a bandwagon jumper.

Neither am i beguiled by Tony Blair. God knows what you lot will do when Brown takes charge.

As for 3rd World companies - i am not sure i know what you mean. 3rd world countries -  and why dont i move there - what a ridiculous thing to say!

Smurfboy - i thought you out of any of the posters on here would be in favour of a live and let live policy and not judging lifestyle choices. Non smokers are free to use no smoking areas as smokers would or could be invited to use designated smoking areas.

I trust all of you have paid in advance for your ID cards and have dna samples ready and waiting?

in case weve all forgotten - WHAT PUBS ARE FOR:

drinking, smoking, pinball, pool-table, darts, raffles and annopying staff.

if you dont want to do at least 2 of these things, then you really should go to a coffee bar instead.

i dont smoke, but banning smoking in a pub is f'n ridiculous. screw it - ban drinking while your at it! bring back prohibition! its as mad as letting kids IN pubs!

Post by: oldspice on February 18, 2006, 08:22:38 am

Lemoneye - re non-smokers using non-smoking areas. That's all very well except the smoke drifts into the non-smoking areas. Also, smokers often ignore this rule and smoke anyway, anywhere they like. And what about the STAFF? They have to work in all areas don't they?

I don't think this is a freedom issues at all. It is a 21st century move towards encouraging a healthy working environment and social environment for all.

Re the reference to the third world - this is the fasting growing market for cigarettes. Companies are targeting the third world because of falling sales in the west. Watch this space - in thirty years time heart disease, lung cancer and other related illnesses will be killing third world citizens in huge numbers - just like they have here for decades.

wjp666 - can you find a smoke free coffee bar for me? Can you even find me a coffee bar that is open after 5pm? Not in my town! What we do have is ONE smoke-free pub with no music and no fruit machines but plenty of books and good conversation. It is a VERY popular pub. Good beer too.

I dont think it is wrong for children to be in pubs unless its after 5 pm when they should be at home having their tea and settling down ready for bed.

As long as there playin in the gardens there not being exposed to smoke.......

I as a smoker do not smoke in front of my children but would not ask somone who was smoking around me to move if i really didn't like it i would move.

Everyone is entitled to there own opinion but alot of people on here seem to think that a few peoples opinions are wrong, opinions are not right or wrong they are what people as individuals think or feel......

Some people choose to smoke some don't and i don't think it should be banned all together maybe have the pubs like they used to where you have a saloon bar and a public bar smokers one end non smokers the other end and as for smoking barmaids working in smoking pubs, if there really that bothered by it then they wouldn't work there.

There are plenty of coffee shops and cafes open past 5pm here and some are non smoking which is fine and i go to those to.

I think people need to be a bit more open minded and not think just because they don't like it that it should be stopped all together, I personally don't like the smell of car fumes or the noise a moped makes but it's the way of the world as is smoking now and drinking also, let it be!!!!

I don't like seeing a bunch of moron's starting a fight in the street because they can't handle there drink, i also don't like smelling of beer when somone has thrown there pint across the bar/floor in a drunken state.

So how about banning all alcohol too??

How is someone drinking alcohol going to affect the person sitting next to them?
Title: Smoking ban
Post by: smurfboy on February 18, 2006, 06:45:38 pm

How?

Through drinking and driving? Never done it, wouldn't do it, won't be able to because I can't drive. I know people do it and it's very wrong, but that is punishable by law. Killing people with your smoke isn't - is that fair?

Are you worried I might end up punching someone whilst drunk? Yes, could happen if I didn't drink responsibly. But the majority of people know how to handle their drink. Second-hand smoke can kill no matter how responsible a person you are.

If you read it properly it says the effects alcohol has on some people costs lives of others... meaning that if somone has a bad reaction to alcohol or has a few to many they think they can take on the world which as you read every day costs lives of others because of a stupid bar brawl.

I myself dont go to pubs very often as i dont particuarly like drinking and the effects it has on people but that is my choice if you dont like smoking dont stand next to a smoker.....

Maybe some pubs should be smoking some should be non smoking then everyone is happy but banning it in public is wrong because as i said for those that dont like it i would either move myself or if there that bothered by it then they move....

You are relatively new to this forum nutsaboutchoc - Bounty was a notorious wind up merchant and part time perv - he was a very regular poster

Merely a minor reposte for some earlier off colour comments - no real sinister undertones implied or intended

I HATE STRIP-BARS! i just think theyre sleazy and annoying. the thought of naked people dancing on my table when im having a drink doesnt do antyhing for me. so guess what? I DONT GO TO STRIP-BARS! ever!

simple solution! im not about to invade parliament and DEMAND all sterippers are removed from strip-bars, because after all, thats what the place is all about.

smoking goes with pubs. if the staff dont like it, then bad luck! they should seek other employment which doesnt involve being around smoke! (ie. i would not work in a cockroach breeding facility, because i dont like roaches. im not going to get a job there and then piss and moan about it!)

im an avid non-smoker, but it offends me when human rights are taken away for no good reason. passive smoking? worried about cancer? dont wanna work in a smoky atmosphere? FINE! DONT GO TO A PUB! i hate snooker (and im worried about getting pranged with a cue and damaging my health), so i'm not going to a snooker club anytime soon... use these simple ethics and we can all co-exist in harnmony.

no more 1984! another decade and we wont be able to drink in pubs either.

My very last word on this topic is:

Smoking is a filthy, anti-social, unhealthy and expensive habit.

In my opinion of course.

"Smoking is a filthy, anti-social, unhealthy and expensive habit."

well said - but i dont believe its up to me to demand everyone to stop smoking everywhere. its not my choice. as an adult i like to enjoy independent thought. and if people want to pollute their lungs with filth, then hey, good luck to 'em. nothing to do with me, or anyone else...

As Kevvosa said, perhaps it's best we agree to disagree. In any case, the law has been passed now, so the pro-smokers lobby can complain all they like - it's too late.

Leomoneye's post - Smurfboy - i thought you out of any of the posters on here would be in favour of a live and let live policy and not judging lifestyle choices. Non smokers are free to use no smoking areas as smokers would or could be invited to use designated smoking areas.

Am I really???
