Title: 50 year-old chicken
Post by: smurfboy on February 09, 2006, 01:53:38 pm

Did you hear about the couple who celebrated their Golden wedding by eating a tin of chicken that was in their wedding hamper?

My question is, how much attention do you pay to best before dates? Do you throw stuff out as soon as it goes out of date, or do you give it a couple of days grace? Or do you ignore them altogether? On fresh food I'll eat it up to three days out of date, but stuff like tins - or even chocolate - I will eat months out of date.

Depends on the item, but generally I don't pay puch attention to best before dates.

I don't pay too much attention to the dates. If its fresh like milk and yogurt I will smell it and judge but stuff like tins, chocolates, crisps and biscuits are fine for a while after.

Jars and tins are usually OK years past their date because they are so well sealed. I find chocolate gets a stale taste if it's much past its date.

I throw everything out on its use by date. It's pathetic really and wasteful but I always have.

Is there a difference between 'best before' or 'use by'

No I think it all means the same

Yes there is a difference

'Best before' (which is usually on packets / jars) means you can still eat it after the date it just won't taste so good.

'Use by' (which is usually on fresh foods) generally means you shouldn't eat it after the date because it is something which will go off.

The wispa I won on eBay was in very good shape suprisingly. It really smelt but the chocolate was the normal chocolate colour and the inside still had all the bubbles.

I then threw it in the bin and washed my hands twice.

I use common sense but generally I will throw out eggs if they are past their use by date. And I'm very wary of yoghurts, milk and meat.

With eggs I do the old 'see if they float in water' trick.  Yogurts I'll eat a day or two after their use-by but no longer.  Milk I sniff and hope!  Meat - no way would I eat past its date.

I check the date on eggs and sometimes it's smudged so if I can't read it I throw them away. Am I too careful?lol

I read this story and felt sick when the man said he didn't warm it up and when he put it on his plate it had lots of jelly stuff on it. Eurgh.....

No!  If they float that's bad.  They will sink to the bottom if they're ok.

I was looking at my Delia How to Cook Book One over the weekend and they had this little experiment in it!
