Does anyone SERIOUSLY still believe in this government? I was hoping for Ken Clarke to take control of the tories and release us from this PC nightmare... Maybe David Cameron can...

I think this government has done a lot of good things but invading Iraq was not one of them. However, the Tories would also have invaded Iraq so - the minimum wage, higher state pensions, low inflation, better facilities for poor communities under the Sure Start scheme and an final end to hunting is more than good enough for me. if David Cameron can top that he's welcome to try. First, though, he has to get elected!

I have said this before but it's worth repeating so take heed.

It makes absolutely no difference what government is in power unless you are very poor or very rich.

The people on the bread line do better historically under Labour while the big earners do better under the Tories.  For the 95% in between forget it and vote for Anne Summers Party like me.

Girls get you kit off!

Higher state pensions? For whom? Great housing (for immigrants and bogus asylum seekers...) Public transport? Please... Ken Livingstone welcomed back and put into a position of power? Do me a favour! EU rebates? Here you go Fat French farmers, you need it more than my babies. Its really not good is it? As for Iraq - if it was TRULY invaded to prevent human atrocities, shouldn't Zimbabwe have been invaded in the same manner? Argh! Don't get me started on politics... If i had two penny pieces to rub together i would most certainly leave the UK until it returns to being remotely sensible and not positively discriminatory.

Apologies for the rant but i feel very short changed these days

You are right.  We invaded Iraq because USA were concerned about them controlling oil fields.  The UK should not have followed on GB's coat tails and you're right about Zimbabwe.  While we're at it where were the UN with Rwanda - Biggest act of genocide since Nazi CC's.

Yes lemoneye, I'm with you.  The UK is a dump run by a bunch of lying ego trippers.

People might sl*g off Labour, but name me one good thing that came out of 18 YEARS of Tory Government. The best Maggie's supporters can usually come up with is that she gave people the right to buy their council houses. Yay, hooray - now the waiting list for council properties is longer than the Great Wall of China! Oh happy day!

A lot more than nowt, which is what Maggie got us!

Don't get me wrong, Labour are far from perfect, but I dread the idea of living under Tory government again.

Don't get me started on the minimum wage.  It has totally wrecked the hotel business and has very far-reaching consequences which were not considered when it was introduced.  People want everyone to get a fair wage but aren't prepared to pay extra themselves so I don't know where they think the money will come from.  Result - staff are cut back to the bone and everyone gets bad service and goes abroad instead.

Another vote of confidence there Smurfy. And you dread to live under a tory government? I didnt think you were old enough to remember... I do find it odd how some people can believe things that others find utterly abhorrent and alien....

Like the song says "Now the world don't move to the beat of just one drum, what might be right for you, may not be right for some..."

I never knew anything other than a Tory government until I was 18 - the Milk Snatcher came into power a month before I was born. Strange really; I never quite understood for quite a few years how unusual a woman prime minister was.

The Community Charge WAS fair. One person, one tax bill. Far fairer than rates or council tax. As usual though, the moron majority read the "mirror" or heard something on Eastenders and went stupid about it. Par for the course really. I shouldn't really expect more from English people. But i do, that is why i am forever disappointed and embarrased.

So, Lemoneye, you moan about immigrants coming to this country, but you're quite happy to be an immigrant yourself!

Community charge fair? Under the old system, as a working man, my husband paid £79 per month local rates. At the time, I was a mum at home lokking after my children. then in comes the Poll tax and both my husband and I get charged £79 each! Result? Our 'local rates' doubles over night. There's inflation for you!

I would move away and become an immigrant, yes Oldspice i would do it in a heartbeat, considering how all their needs are catered for by the taxpayer. Free house, free money and god knows what else. Fair? I dont think so.

Lemoneye, you've been reading the wrong papers. All this free house, free car nonsense is just rumour stirred up by The Sun etc. Come and see my hard-working immigrant/asylum seeker students and compare them with some of the rude, idle locally produced types.

For every sponging immigrant, I can show you 10 born-and-breds with their hands out and their the-world-owes-me attitude.

I would never tar all with the same brush, but i do find it frustrating that despite all my years of paying tax and NI etc when I need something, I am not entitled to receive due to my ethnic status and fact that i am not a perennial sponger! Nothing to do with papers - more due to personal experience!

I know the free car stuff is true because when my brother had his car for sale an asylum seeker came and left a £50 deposit then came back the next day with a cheque from the DSS for £2,500. When my brother asked why the cheque was from the DSS the asylum seeker said it was because the DSS was buying him a car and paying for his insurance so he could transport his wife, mother and 2 kids around.

I also know that my sister in law has the job of delivering televisions to asylum seekers and they have a new rule. When she takes the tv in their house she has to bring away the box and all the packaging because in the past they have been selling these tv's on for cash.

Post by: smurfboy on December 13, 2005, 05:19:30 pm
I don't see why they should be given TVs in the first place. I'm not one of these people who blames asylum seekers for every ill in society, but surely free accomodation, benefits, foood vouchers etc. is more than generous!

My husband's hotel chain employs over a hundred asylum seekers as waiters/chamber maids etc.  Many (I wouldn't say all) boast to him about the benefits they receive, to the extent that they are able to send all their wages home to their families.  A lot of money is leaving the UK this way.  Although they are mostly hard workers, their lack of English makes them very difficult to work with and unpopular with the guests.  The hotels are forced to employ them, as the minimum wage has meant that they can't afford to pay the management any more than that.

GC my friend works in a hotel and she says the same . The asylum seekers cannot communicate with the guests or other staff and do speak of sending money back home. One man works as a night porter and said he has to hold down a job for 2 years then his wife will be allowed to come and join him. He says although he is receiving wages he also receives vouchers from the DSS for food and clothing. And get this....he got a free mobile phone for his security.

At a food court in Las Vegas I asked a Chinese worker the way to the toilet. She had no idea what I was saying. I understand maybe people won't have great English when they've recently moved to a country, but how can you do a job properly when you can't even answer a question that simple?

Title: NEW Tory leader!
Post by: oldspice on December 15, 2005, 04:39:34 pm

The problem may be the language you actually used. If you asked her the way to the toilet she may have translated that as how do I perform my toilet?  Foreign speakers of English, especially those from countries where the langauge system is very different to English, need clear direct questions such as where is the toilet?
