Have just seen a post on here originally written by me for another forum (although posted by somebody else)! It refers to Cadbury's Sunfruit - a product available from the mid-late '80s, possibly experimental or of limited availability. It was of the same mould as a Caramel (or Marble etc.) and had a dried crystallised currant filling. The wrapper was pink with the name 'Sunfruit' in burgundy italic writing, made of the foilized paper (folded under) as was the norm at that time. The first time I bought one was from John Menzies on Birmingham's New Street station in 1987, and I used to regularly buy them from station kiosks in London for the next few years. The reason this is an issue for me is that Cadbury's have denied ever making it and I wish to prove them wrong! Somebody suggested that I mistook the name for 'Bradburys' or similar. Well, I DID NOT! It was Cadbury's, identical in size and shape to Caramel. I'm not senile (yet!)
OK, how do you post an image on here?
I've drawn a Sunfruit wrapper in MS Paint, stored it as a .jpg but I can't copy and paste it into a new message.
Anyone help?
Doesn't work. Seems you can only link to images on the web - and I don't have a website to put it on.
You've no idea how involved this was!
Anyway, it's an approximation of how I remember it. Should hopefully jog a few memories. Same family as Caramel, 6 (or was it 7?) segments, one-piece foilized paper wrapper folded under.
What about Oldspice or Choccy Chick? I was hoping you'd be my saviours!
I was never Eeyore - sorry!
Re. previous post - no, I did not make a mistake. I bought enough of them for goodness sake. (BTW I have never heard of "Bradbury's".) As I have said all along, this product (of the late 1980s) was from the Caramel family, just like 'Marble' (which definitely existed too) but the filling was a fine currant and sugar crystal paste. Actually, I remember when Caramel was first introduced in the 1970s, with free samples being given out in the supermarket, so by the '80s I was quite familiar with shape of the product and the one-piece foilized paper wrapper (as opposed to purple foil with a paper sleeve, or one-piece plastic like today's). Without being rude I suspect that at 36 I am a little older than you, but this does not mean that I have lost my marbles or become senile or confused or anything like that. (How old are you, Smurfboy?) Of course, this may have been a lower-profile product of regional or limited availability, just like Spira is today. It certainly wasn't available in all shops. But to the doubters on here I am sure that one day I will prove you all wrong! ;)
Hi,
I realise that - no offence taken. In fairness, there's a remote chance that it may have been called Sunfruits (as opposed to Sunfruit) but the general description stands. Some research on my part has found that it could have been manufactured by Cadbury in Ireland and imported to the UK. That would explain a lot.
Ah yes!
Might have been me actually. How very observant of you!
There was a bar called Bradbury's Sunfruit! Do you really think Cadbury's nicked the exact name? You made a mistake CleverDick, deal with it!
Right then - what's THIS?????????????
I agree the typeface is different, but then this must be an earlier version that I don't recall.

he wasn't going to let you get away with that one Smurfy!
Well I can't argue with that!
It's taken seven months but he was going to prove his point.
Glad you mind has been put at reat though cleverdick. As you are so good at finding obscure chocolate bars, could you find an old Cabana bar so we can find out who made it? Cadbury's deny ever having made it but we think differently.

I must admit I thought that was a little bit tragic too...

The real tragedy is that they don't make it anymore!
I think it sounds absolutely bogging!
Hi!
I know that this topic has been dormant for some time, but I HAVE to speak out. I am so glad that someone else remembers Cadbury's Sunfruit(s) too. I was hooked on them during the late 1980s and early 1990s and they were largely responsible for my teenage weight gain. When my local shop ran out (I lived in a town in Fife at the time), they never received any more and left me devastated.
I actually made a post on the "A Quarter Of..." messageboard about this very subject. I'll quote it below:
"Does anyone remember a chocolate bar made by Cadbury's called either Sunfruits or Summerfruits? These came out for a short period in the late 1980s or early 1990s (can't remember the exact year). The bar was similar in appearance to a Cadbury's Caramel bar in that it had a chocolate exterior with little "compartments". However, each compartment was filled with a fruity, berry, truffle-like substance. These were responsible for turning me into a tubby teenager with bad skin...nevertheless, I would still smack my granny to taste one again. Nobody I know seems to remember them either - my friends and family think I'm delusional, but I can remember scoffing them two at a time as a youngster. OK, I'm a little unsure of the name, but there has got to be someone else out there who remembers them too."
I am overjoyed that I have been vindicated by Cleverdick and Oldspice. And I wholeheartedly agree...they were amazing.

Hi all, Here is a copy of yet more email correspondence between myself and Cadbury's. As you will see, eventually they did own up to making Sunfruts (my mistake re. name). But it wasn't until I sent them a scan of the wrapper I bought on eBay that they believed me! I'll try and get a picture of it on here somehow. The wrapper was, I'm certain, facelifted - I only remember the one with italic writing, but the colour scheme was the same and is spot on WRT my description. Let's all email Cadbury's! If everyone on here did that, then it might stand a chance! Hello Richard |
Ah, that's why so many of us had never heard of it. Cadbury regularly used to trial bars regionally.
Sorry to be pessimistic, but if it was never nationally introduced after its trial, I think there's more chance of finding a unicorn in the cupboard under the stairs than it being reintroduced.
I'm not so sure because this Cadbury's Sunfruit bar sounds familiar to me too. The pink and burgandy wrapper particularly ring a bell. And don't forget that Cadburys also denied making Cabana bars!
I know this is ancient news but I just spotted this when rereading the thread. Cadbury deny making Cabanas because Rowntree made them!
Yes, I realised that recently too.
I think it's strange that Cadbury do not have people still working there from 1987. I would have thought a big, old company like Cadbury would have a little old boy in production somewhere (usually a floor sweeper) who remembers everything the company ever made, said and did.
And who keeps their archives? I would not like them looking after national archives. It would be like 1984 where everything they don't want people to remember is wiped from the records!

They probably do, but who's going to spend half a day searching a massive site like Bournville for info on a bar that was discontinued 20 years ago and was never even a national release? Poor old Audrey must have enough to do in the day.
Oh God you sound like L******e. he used to say that!
I think a soft balckcurrant filling would be fantastic.

Noooooooooooooooooooo!
I can't believe you're old enough to remember it Smurfy!
I was about four or five when it was on I think. I've seen repeats since.
Yes, we've had that discussion many times
Welcome to the Froum! Our very own chocolate historian!
Cadbury did make Sunfruits as you have found out .It was a Limited Edition and was made on the Caramel Plant. It was only made once. The centre was a caramel like filling but was flavoured with blackcurrent. It sold for the same price as Caramel.Cadbury did not make Cabana - it was a Rowntree Product
