Title: Charlie and the Chocolate factory review
Post by: on August 21, 2005, 09:18:26 am

Went to see this last night.  The first 40 minutes follows the original to a Tee.  However the setting is more atmospheric and the actors are better.  (Look out for the one-armed, Irish waiter from Robin's nest) - just superb.

We are introduced to the four other lucky ticket winners who are each horrible yet loveable in their own ways and at last the five teams including Charlie of course are assembled outside Wonkers.  The similarities to the first film end there.

Wonker is a dysfunctional, Jacksonesque character who has all the eccentricity of Wilder's version with just a hint of sicko.  The many Hoompa Loompas are all played by the same actor (an amusing Asian man) and camera trickery is used to obtain size-effects rather than those with Achondroplasia.  There is an element of late 60's - 70's retro cum prog rock in a number of Hoompa Loompa sonngs wickedly singing the demise of the various kiddies.

We are of course left with Bucket, Grandad and Wonka. There is a great twist at the end, which I wont spoil and a superb cameo by Christopher Lee.  An excellent feel good movie, which will appeal to slightly older kids and adults on different levels.

Bounty Points 8.1/10

I thought it was enjoyable - better than the original which I found sickening. There was a post-modern but gothic feel.

Yest post-modern in places, but not sure about Gothic.

None. Water

Afterwards we went to Costa coffee and had Mediterranean chicken panini and hot chocolate with whipped crean and marsh mallows.  It was great.

Not as great as a big bucket of popcorn with minstrels mixed in.

I would prefer the bucket of Minstrels without the popcorn.  Panini sounds good though - the cafe over the road from where I work does a brilliant Jamaican chicken one with lime pickle.

How sad.  You are a victim of the soundbite culture. Anyway you aren't interested unless you know who's in it.  Typical.  Somehow the more you make me angry the sexier you become.

Thanks for your review Bounty, I thought some of the backstory bits
about Wonka's dad felt a bit out of place but they added some nice
touches to the overall story.

I'm going to try and see it at the imax next (the boat ride should be absolutely fantastic).

Oh yes and the 2001 bit was sheer brilliance!

For me cinema=bag of minstrels
